Hiking routes in Daisetsuzan Park

by naili Online Now Jun 10, 2010 at 6:07 PM

Hi, I had a question about hiking routes in Daisetsuzan Park. It is a big park with many trails but surprisingly there is not much information about the trails themselves.

I want to start from Furano or Asahikawa and go on a whole day hike (7+ hrs, a bit challenging) and see lots of blooming wildflowers and end at a point where I can either take a bus to either town or stop at an onsen and get back to town the next morning fairly easily.

From Asahikawa, it seems everyone takes a bus to Asahidake base and then a ropeway (is that a cable car?) to the onsen. From there is it possible to hike to Sounkyo Onsen in a day? Hiking to Furano seems to take at least 3-4 days so that is too long for me.

But I read that the area near Furano is much more peaceful and has more wildflowers. Which hiking trail can you recommend for great scenery?

Alternatively, would I be better off trying to find a route at Lake Toya?
