New Years

by stanrubin Online Now Aug 15, 2010 at 4:05 PM

Arriving the 29th of December for four nights. Just reserved a room at Wrest Point Hotel, one of the few available in all of Hobart. I didn't do as much due diligence as usual and wonder if the location is OK and is Hobart as great as billed over new years???

Thanks!!

Stan

Well, you have certainly got a great location at Wrest Point. You are close to everything.Hobart is a small city compared to most but it is very scenic and surrounded by water and mountains.Constitution Dock and Salamanca Place would be the place to go for New Years Eve celebrations and the fire works are quite nice, but be prepared they are nothing like Sydney,New Years Eve celebrations that are world renowned.

Have a great time in Hobart Town and hope this has helped you.

    Cheers Dorrise

Wrest Point Hotel is located by the water and does have excellent views but is not located in the heart of Hobarts waterfront. The hotel itself is very busy on New Years Eve as older people tend to congregate there rather than at Salamanca Place which is mostly full of drunk rowdy young people later in the evening.

Hobart is a nice place to visit over the Christmas New Year Period but there is not a lot to see and do on the waterfront on New Years Eve unless you book tickets for the Taste of Tasmania News Years Eve Party. Most locals enjoy the Taste of Tasmania food and entertainment Festival up to and after News Years Eve when the waterfront is buzzing with activity and the Sydney Hobart Yachts and yachties are in town.

I would just enjoy the evening at Wrest Point for two reasons. You can see the fireworks display (dont expect much) from there and it will be impossible to get a taxi from the waterfront back to the hotel. Wrest Point has a revolving restaurant if you are interested in having a posh meal and 360 degree views of Hobart.

Wrest Point is only a few minutes drive or cab ride from the city centre along Sandy Bay Road,or a good brisk walk if you feel energetic.

It is a bit old but still has a relaxing charm about it.Seeing that you have few options available then I believe you are fortunate to get a room there.

Personally,I prefer some of the smaller guest houses in Hobart. It is really a nice city no matter where you stay. Also remember that time of the year the noise factor from parties and celebrating including over imbibing is everywhere.

    Cheers again

The Sydney to Hobart yacht race impacts on the accommodation in Hobart at this time around the 28th December to new year and you did well to get reasonably good accommodation. It will work out OK.
