hi guys, I will be traveling to Hobart for 5 nights (24-29 Oct) and looking for advice/suggestions to get the best out of the trip. I have done a bit of research on the internet and there seem to be many things to do in Hobart. How many days do you think i should spend on seeing the city itself? I am thinking of having a look at the Salamacan place, Mt. Wellington, Royal Botanic garden. any other suggestions? I would really love to visit the Tarhune airwalk, Port Arthur and going on one of the cruises. The problem is i cant rent a car because I havent got a full australian license or equivalent. Is it possible to visit Port Arthur and Tarhune airwalk with public transport / coaches. I did look at the guided tours and they seem a bit pricey. any advice/ suggestion is very much appreciated.
Can't help on the transport question. Suggest you might like to include the historic town of Richmond in the tripping around. Port Arthur is a must see. The city itself is quite compact and can easily be done in one day. Salamanca Place does have the Saturday market and is also worth a visit. Try and do some walking around Battery Point - lots of quaint houses and a few great pubs tucked away in the back streets. BTW entrance fees to Port Arthur do include a short cruise - sorry I don't have any idea on transport without a car.

Thanks Sirgaw for your quick reply. My problem would definitely be me not being able to rent a car. Getting around Hobart seems easy enough with the metro buses. Getting to other Hobart surroundings however appears a bit more difficult. I think Tassielink does connect Hobart and Geeveston but I am not sure if there is any shuttle bus/bus service between Geeveston to the Tarhune Airwalk site. I m thinking of going on one of the Bruny Island eco/Peppermint bay/ Gordon River cruise. I am more leaning towards the Bruny Island Cruise. Can I get to Bruny Island from Hobart by bus/coach? Cheers

Hi! It is possible to use public transport. I will give you the links http://www.tassielink.com.au/ and http://www.metrotas.com.au/

when in Hobart don't forget to visit Moorilla Estate on the estuary - serviced by fast ferry...not just a winery...art gallery and collections are superb.

You should also pack some warm clothing as Hobart can get VERY cold. We were there in Oct a few years ago and got snow on Mt Wellington. Not sure if there is any transport to the top of the mountain, but if there is suggest a stop off at the old Cascade Brewery - the gardens there are worth a visit and the beer is good too - LOL

If you do a cruise with Bruny Cruises, they have a bus picking you up from Hobart. Of course this is maybe a bit more expensive than public transport.

thanks for all your replies thus far. I have been researching the internet for less expensive ways of getting around Hobart and to places of interests without a car. It seems quite difficult!!! There are shuttle services/public buses to places of interests within Hobart and to Mount Wellington. However, It seems i must go on guided tours from Hobart to the Tahune Airwalk and Bruny Island. These tour are quite pricey and they include many activities which I can do on my own (indeed I prefer explore the city on my own). So the question is..does anyone know any car hire companies in Tasmania/hobart who will let you rent their cars without an Australian unrestricted license? Many thanks

I'm pretty sure you can rent a car without an Australian license per se? Or is the problem that you don't have a full license from your home country? In any case, Port Arthur is fabulous and I would fully recommend seeing this somehow.

I am pretty sure that when you are from another country you need an international license, which of course you can only get if you have a full license in your home country. But you should check this on the official sites, maybe it depends on which country you're from!
