Hi, I'm planning to go to HCMC for a few days at the beginning of June, but I'm not yet convinced if it is a good choice. My questions are simple: - is there anything special to do/visit during the day? - how is nightlife? How are clubs? I'm looking for easy-going clubs, like pubs, not for hi-tech discos with snob people; is it possible to find trance music? Thx a lot!
You can see the few sites in Saigon within three days. You can actually walk the route of most sites in one day. The reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, Post Office, a couple of pagodas, the river front, Ben Thanh Market and a couple others. Not a whole lot to see really. To me, it's people and restaurants that are the main attraction. You can take one day bus tour and visit the Cao Dai Temple in Tay Ninh and the Cu Chi Tunnels. Both interesting in their own way. Leave in the morning and get back by about 4pm. Another one day tour is to Ben Tre near My Tho city. About 1 1/2 hour from Saigon. Take a boat right across a river and walk through some well traveled paths seeing candymaking, handcrafts and a type of canoe ride back to the boat. Also there are some good seafood restaurants in My Tho along the river. I never heard of trance music. Haven't even heard of it mentioned before you did. Wouldn't have a clue if it is available in Saigon. There is Sheridan's Irish Pub with light rock music by various bands, on Le Thanh Ton street. Another Irish Pub would be O'Brian's on Hai Ba Trung street. Both are near City Center downtown. Don't know if O'Brian's has music in the evening. It does have better sheppard's pie than Sheridan's, in my opinion. You can make your trip as active as you like or just take it easy. Enjoy your trip, Mike

Great advice from Mike - totally agree. It's more about people and restaurants. I remember that there were some quaint little pubs in District 1 - not far from Dong Khoi street - I know they played music - not sure if they played trance though. Have fun!!

Here're some suggestions: - Cafe Latin - 25 Dong Du street, dis.1 - Gossip club - 79 Tran Hung Dao Str. - Lost in Saigon - 277 Pham Ngu Lao Dis.1 Besides I think you should try some traditional food restaurants. We have some: - Ancient town restaurant - 211 Dien Bien Phu, Dis.1 - Dzoan - 34 Nguyen Thi Dieu - Dis.3 In Vietnam there is no tuk tuk like in Laos, however, apart from taxis you can go by "xe om", it means "hug motobike" ^^ Of course you don't have to hug the riders ;) Remember to bargain when you go by "xe om" and to make some "researches" about the rout too. Have fun in our beloved city.
