From Ben Tanh market or even streets around Bui Vien and Pham Ngu Lao - go for a nice T-shirt with Saigon written (woven) across the front. Beautiful :-)

Other than that - silk screen paintings, and silk thread artwork, plus lacquer designs.

I loved the cotton bags with draw strings and a shoe embroidered on the front, they made wonderful presents for my friends who travel, you can get them for underwear etc as well. As well as most of the other things already mentioned.

Laquer wares, hand-stitched pouch/purse (from Sapa),bamboo bookmarks, chopstick set, embroideries, Vietnamese oil painting, framed pictures depicting elegant vietnamese ladies. All these are available a Binh Thanh Market in city. Light outfits - Binh Thanh market is hugh,non-aircon, quite stuffy, one gets perspiring easily after a short walk in there.
