We are going to Fort William at the end of May. From there we plan to rent a car and want to see all the amazing views of the area. The Isle of Skye is high on our list but not sure how long to spend there and how to balance the rest of our stay. Is it worth driving all the way up to Durness and continue along the coast to the east and down south or is it best to stick to Skye? Any tips welcome
Hi I'm planning a visit the last week of March. I'm told this is a good place to view Whales and other marine life, as well as stunning scenery. Where on the Isle is the best place to see these things. Thanks
Hi, I will be reaching Fort William on 19 October for 4 days with my husband and 3 year old kid. Can anyone please suggest day tours from Fort William? I will be coming as a part of Coach tour from Birmingham. For two days - 20 and 21 October, I wanted to explore myself. Are there any day trips I can take to nearby locations? If yes, then which are the tour operators I should contact.
Want to see the highlands and I am wondering if the best way is to rent a car. I live in the u.s. and to get to the isolated places one needs a car. Is this true for the no highlands? I have about 3 wks.
can anyone recommend a pub/club that will be showing the Wimbledon final live on Sunday afternoon?

My family (including 2 girls - 3 & 6 years old) are planning a weeks holiday on Isle of Skye in Aug. Other than amazing walking, what else is there to do on the Island for adults with young children, and also directly for young children? In addition, where is the best place / village to base ourselves for a week in order to see the best of the Island? We will be self catering. Any help / advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Chris Harding
Hi, most of the posts I found were old so I thought I would try a new post. I and my daughter (19 years) will be traveling to Skye in June. We will not have a car and will rely on public transport. We want to do the train from Fort William to Mallaig and see a ferry from there to Armadale. Just wondering how in the world I would get around from there to Portree or somewhere with more options. Or maybe its better to do the train to Mallaig and a bus onward? We will have 3-5 days to spend, any ideas, recommendations would be great! We are also hoping to do hostels/couchsurfing most of the time but if a hotel/BB is really worth it we can splurge a little now and then. Thanks for your help!
Can anyone please indicate where I can find a Catholic Church in Aviemore or in the vicinity? Many thanks

Staying at the Gairloch hotel, how far is it from town of Gairloch, i.e. walkable or taxi ride
I realise that our funny UK weather varies from year to year, but, we are hoping to spend Christmas on Skye and wondered whether travel (we shall be coming either by car from the south of England or by air to Glasgow then car) to Skye is difficult or even impossible as a rule in December.
What are some good places to stay and eat either on or near The isle of Skye? Also, what are some good short walks, for a 70 and 72 year old, in the area?
We have a 3 year old and one under a year. Would it still be okay to try to do the Isle of Skye - are there enough areas we could get to/walk about (we can use carriers for both children if need be). We will be travelling there in early october and will have a rental car. Also, is it fine to just drive from Inverness to the Isle of Skye? Would that be about 4 hoursish? Thanks!
Hello Can anyone recommend good cheap accommodation for one night hostel or B & B, we have a car so able to get anywhere Isle of Skye or close by Cheers
Hi, I am checking the weather forecast and it looks like there will be light to heavy rain this weekend. Since I originally plan to hike to Steall Falls, it looks like the rain may put a damper on those plans. Can anyone suggest some activities for a potentially heavy rain day? If not, I guess I'll be spending a lot of time in the pub! Thanks.
I'm a writer looking for a small room with a beautiful sea view for two weeks beginning 22 September. My birthday is September 26th and I want to spend it on the Isle of Skye. Any suggestions as to where a single, mature woman could safely and inexpensively stay? Thanks for any helpful comments. PS: The only reason I'm waiting so long is so I can save up for the airfare from the US.
Could you tell me how much the bus is from Ullapool to Inverness please?
Am travelling with my family by car from ayrshire to Isle of Skye. Does anyone know if we can get a car ferry crossing or will we need to drive the whole way? Thanks in advance.
Hi there! I'm new to VT and thought I'd introduce myself and perhaps post a "meet" if there is interest. I will be in Inverness - the second stop of my trip and thought it would be great to see if other VT'rs might want to meet for beer/drink/soda/coffee? I've been reading all the great posts, tips, photo's, planners etc. but I think meeting folks in person is the best way to learn and understand the area, but more importantly - meet new friends :) I'm only going to be walking and taking public transporation and will be staying "minutes away from all Inverness has to offer" and "right in the heart of Inverness" at a B&B. So I wanted to see if there was any interest and if so - get suggestions on where and when to meet. Thanks to all and hope to be meeting some of you! Paula
Here is the rough draft plan for our "Highlands" part of our Oct '11 visit. I realize we're going to be quite tired at the end of each day. We are having a driver. I've looked over group tours offered by companies and it seems workable to me. Not planning to much (I think) between Points A and B so we can "go with the flow". Ideas, suggestions, etc are most welcome and desired!! LOL Day 1 Oban –Lunch in Oban. Head north to Ft. William, going thru Glen Coe. Arrive at BB in Ft. William. Day 2 Ft. William day Day 3 Leave Ft. William by the Jacobite Steam train. Arrives in Mallaig at 12:25pm. Lunch in Mallaig. Travel on towards Skye. Stop at Eileen Donan castle, Bright Water Center at Kyleakin. Travel on to Uig. Day 4 Skye day – Explore between Uig and Dunvegan. Dinner at 3 Chimneys. Day 5 Go to Harris via Uig ferry. Leaves at 9:40 am, arriving Harris at 11:20am. Visit several tweed shops, Callanis Standing stones, then St Moluag church and the Butt of Lewis. Then to Stronoway. Day 6 Explore the harbor area of Stronoway before boarding the 2:30pm ferry to Ullapool on the mainland. Ferry arrives Ullapool at 5:15pm, have dinner and head to BB. Day 7 Up and out early towards Durnessd. Travel thru villages on single track roads. Arrive BB in Durness. Day 8 Head south to Dornoch. Overnight at the Dornoch Castle Hotel. Day 9 South towards Loch Ness. Travel thru Tain, then swing onto a side road to go thru Nigg and by ferry to Cromarty. Drive thru the village of Rosemarkie, stopping to lunch. From there Stirling to see Bannockburn battlefield, Stirling Bridge, and the Wallace monument. In Falkirk see the “Falkirk Wheel”. At the end of the day and end of tour, we’ll finish at our BB in Edinburgh.
We will be staying at the National Hotel in Dingwall from 24.9.10 to 27.9.10 and would like to know where would be the best place for dinner on Saturday 25th for a 50th birthday meal? No dietary restrictions. Total of 4 Adults. Thank you. Christine
Hi I am in New Zealand but hope in the not too distant future to visit Skye on my yacht which we will sail from here. Can you please tell me what facilities there may be for visiting yachts and where they are - e.g. marinas. We are particularly interested in visiting our ancestral home at Armadale. Thank you Jim Donald
I finally booked my place to stay in Inverness. I will be in Edinburgh for the first part of my stay in Scotland. I will be taking a few day trips out of Edinburgh to see the surrounding area. On August 4, I will be taking a train up to Inverness to stay till August 7. There seems to be many wonderful places to see in the Highlands. I would love to be able to see the most scenic places during my short visit. Could someone suggest a few must see places in the region surrounding Inverness? Best Regards Ty
