Purchasing a mobile phone in Helsinki for my trip

by thechat Online Now Jun 24, 2011 at 7:48 PM

Hello, Arriving in Helsinki in early July. Need to purchase a mobile phone as the one I currently own in Canada does not have a removeable SIM card - therefore cannot unlock etc. Looking to buy a inexpensive "pay as you go" when I arrive. Any suggestions on where, what and cost to purchase?

Hi, This may surprise you, but phones are more expensive in Finland! you'd be better off to buy such a phone in CA before you leave for FI! Enjoy the nature in FI :-)

Hi! The expat site, that was linked is very much outdated. The prepaid subscriptions are much cheaper nowadays. You can find cheap mobile phones on special in many shops - like Gigantti. I suggest that when you arrive here, you purchase a local prepaid card. They are available at R-Kioski convenience stores, which you'll find everywhere in the country. - - - Example: Saunalahti started package 6,70 e (Special price 5,90 until 14th July 2011) The package contains 6,00 e worth air time. You can also load more air-time any time at R-Kioski. The subscription starter package is valid 3 months from first use, and then after reloading 12 months from the latest reload. The calls in Finland cost 6,6 c per minute, the calls will be charged per used seconds. SMS text messages cost 6,6 c each. Calling abroad will cost extra on that according to international call charges. Mobile data costs 1,50 e per MB, but is capped to 1,90 e per day unlimited. - - There are also other prepaid subscriptions available, but Saunalahti is very good and one of the cheapest. - - - The best part in using a local prepaid subscription here is that anyone calling to you from your home country pay the international calls themselves, and you aren't charged for incoming calls. (If you use your home country subscription, they pay only domestic fee and you pay the international call charges!) - - Also anybody calling to you from Finland pay only a domestic charge, not international which would be the case with a foreign subscription SIM. The only inconvenience is that you can't be reached at your usual number, but you can tell (via SMS) to those who need to be able to contact you what your Finnish number is. On the other hand getting a lot of calls from abroad with a foreign subscription while abroad could become very expensive for you if you are paying the international charges
