Will be visiting Frankfurt and Heidelberg end of July with family for holidays. My son wants to visit their medical school of both univerisities. Does anyone know if they organise visits during July?

I don't consider this to be a travel question (just because YOU have to travel to visit the schools in question!) but generally speaking, Heidelberg University, yes, Medical School specifically no: heidelberg.edu/admissions/vi... and see item on "personalized campus visit" below "register here". I don't know that Frankfurt University organises visits at all, but in any case it would be best for your son to contact the Medical Schools directly: - medizinische-fakultaet-hd.un... - med.uni-frankfurt.de/index.h... (or in English, uni-frankfurt.de/english/int... or uni-frankfurt.de/english/int...

I think it would be best to contact the universities directly about potential visits. Here's the contact email for Frankfurt (international students): International@uni-frankfurt.de and for Heidelberg: studium@uni-heidelberg.de

It is highly unlikely that there will be visits also because in July the universities are closed for summer holidays. Heidelberg has an office run by medical students which provides information to potential students. Their offices are open on Tuesdays from 12.30 to 13.30. Here the link to their site (in German).

Thank you very much for your respond. Maybe I should continue with the tourist travel plans and leave the visits to the Unis. during winter.

Universities are not 'closed' in July. The summer semester, hence the classes and lectures, end around July 15. Afterwards it's time for tests and exams. Only in August there will be hardly anybody there. However, I doubt that any university 'organizes visits' to unknown visitors. Depends what your interest is about. If your son intends to study there or do a research programme, he has to get in touch with university offices, student representatives, or if he is already specialized in a certain field of medicine, with the relevant institute to make an appointment with someone to show him round. The resp. university's website will help to find detailed information and contact data.

    > also consider hannover, they are well known for their medical school. Since when? I agree with you on Frankfurt, but I am not aware of any university in Hannover worth to be mentioned. If (!) one can trust rankings, RWTH Aachen and Witten/Herdecke are among the best

I work at a Uni (though it is in the UK) and we certainly don't close over the Summer, there are conferences and summer schools and even olympic hosting going on here. I don't get a break, many academics do disapear though so if he wanted to meet his prospective course leader it may not be the best time. We have a centrally ran team who organise tours (the admissions service) around our campuses and specific faculties and we have a self-guided tour available too. We do have specific open days though, about 2 per term (3 terms a year) that are really geared towards showing the place off to prospective students. On the downside of visiting out of term time your son wouldn't get the best student experience impression; not having current students to talk to about the courses and the place being rather quieter; our bars and shops close early so the atmosphere isn't the same. As you're visiting anyway it would really help him to get an idea of the place anyhow, go for it! He could go back to an official open day. Provided you make an appointment I can't see why July wouldn't be an option.
