Hi I'd like to know if anybody has been here recently, as I'm planning on going to Somaliland in about a month and a half ... Also, would I be able to catch a bus from Hargeysa to Berbera?
I was in Hargeysa a few months ago. Busses or minibusses (don´t know how they call matatus in Somali) should be going to Berbera - the drive takes about 3 hours, gives you a bit of a desert experience, too. So what do you need to know?

Hi thanks for your reply ... besides always wanting to go to the 'Horn of Africa" - just something about it that I just feel I must go .. Cant explain it! I'm in Kenya at the moment on my way to Ethiopia and then I'll be going to Somalia! I just hope and pray I get a visa. Also, I'm meet so many Somalians and they seem amazing people. They told me Somalia's a beautiful country but unfortunately they cant live there - war etc. Were you travelling as a tourist? or work? and did you go to other places in Somalia that you can recommend, as my goal is to get to Caluula.

My stay was work related, Somalia is not exactly a tourist place. If you head to Ethiopia, you can also either fly into Hargeisa or go overland, you will have to hire a military escort though from the Ethiopian/Somali border (requirement by Somali government for security reasons) I have only been to Hargeisa and Berbera - well, and on the road between. I got my visum on arrival - as Somaliland is not internationally recognized, neither are their visa. And when entering the country you will have to exchange about 50 - not that you can buy a lot with the local currency. Most people at cafes, shops, hotels etc prefer Dollars

Wow hire a 'convoy' that's going to be ridiculously expensive.... I'm going to the Embassy tomorrow so hope I'll get good news.! Thanks for your info!

it´s not a convoy, it´s two soldiers to travel with you for security reasons. it would be big money in Mogadishu or Bossasso, but should be done with a couple of dollars on that stretch of road
