      where to stay

      Hamburg 15 hours ago

Hi everybody, I am flying to Hamburg at the beginning of May for 4 nights. I've never been there and would like to get a nice impression of the city, where it is better to stay? In the centre or in which suburbs? I've found nice private b&b but cannot evaluate if the location is convenient for sightseeing, shops or restaurants. Many thanks in advance to everybody willing to answer me.

      Augsburg Yesterday

Are there any free walking tours in Augsburg? I have been to several whilst traveling in South America and I loved it. It was mostly conducted by university students who showed us a great time on a shoestring budget. Would appreciate if someone could point me in the correct direction! Has anyone tried this yet? http://jeanrichardtour.com I was recommended this Augsburg Free Walking Tour by an acquaintance, but was wondering if anyone else has gone on this tour? It is apparently free and runs everyday. Anybody wanna check it out together? I will be in Augsburg on the second week of April! Arriving on 16 April from Munich. Hope to meet some new friends!

      German Wine Route Day Tour

      Germany Mar 28, 2015 at 2:14 PM

We are planning a two week trip to Germany , late September 2015.We are trying to find a one day bus tour of the German Wine Route , the one in the Neustadt Region. As of today our trip includes Munchen , Garmisch, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, the Black Forest train ride , Lake Konstantz , and Mainz to do a Rhine river cruise.
So we are only trying to fit in a one day on the Wine Route. A day trip bus tour out of Heidelberg would work just fine.
Any suggestions.? Last year we spent ten days in Berlin and area and everything worked out just fine . Actuakky just perfect..

    • Is there a town called Schopfloch in this region?

Schwäbische Alb Mar 21, 2015 at 6:04 PM

I am working on my family genealogy of the Pfau family, who lived in Schopfloch and several were mayors of the city in 1700s and early 1800s. but my genealogist says there are 3 Schopflochs in Germany. In my family history it describes it as a town "in southern Germany, in the Schwabisch Alb region" The genealogist says these are the three but I can't tell which is the one described in the family records. Do any of you know?
      her quotes:
Which one? There are 3 in Germany:
72296 Schopfloch near Freudenstadt (phone book full of PFAUs) I suppose it is this one?
73252 Schopfloch between Stuttgart and Ulm (Württemberg) (some PFAUs)
91626 Schopfloch near Ansbach/Nürnberg (Bavaria) (no PFAUs) my knowledge of German geography is poor but can any of you tell me which is the most likely the one my family describes as southern germany near Schwabische Alb? I'm guessing it is this one but I can't find any map to let me know there is a Schopfloch in this region. Does anyone know? thanks so much . Fred Lorey

      Elbtunnel suggestions

      Hamburg Mar 2, 2015 at 2:22 AM

I am going back to Hamburg in mid-May, for 5 days, having been persuaded by two former work colleagues (who have no German and have never visited Hamburg) to act as translator, organiser and guide. So this may be the first of a few questions...
Last time I walked through the Elbtunnel, it was being refurbished and ther were no cars. I assume the work is now complete (correct?) and that we would be sharing the tunnel with cars. Anyway, has anyone any suggestions for what to do once you emerge from the tunnel ion the southern bank of the Elbe? Last time, I took in the view of the city across the river, walked past the various works entrances to Blohm + Voss, and looked for a memorial to the prisoners from Neuengamme who had worked as forced-labourers in the shipyards (I never found it. Does it exist? Where exactly is it?), My main question: Is there any 'route' back to 'central' Hamburg, involving a reasonable walk and/or public transport, other than a stroll back through the tunnel?

Taxi from Airport to the Center

by Kajser-MK Online Now Feb 20, 2012 at 6:04 AM

I will travel to Hannover late April this year for the fair (Messe).

I have been there once and used public transport system -it is quite convenient.

This time though I must use a taxi since my flight comes quite late (10:30 p.m)-it is not possible to use train/bus. I am renting a room during the Fair so the host will not be very happy to see me around midnigth on the door.

In any case, does any one know how much approximately is the taxi cost from Airport in Hannover to Pelikanstrasse station .

How much time takes the ride to?
Any specific taxi company to avoid?

Thanx in advance for the answers.

Trains and best way to purchase tickets for multi day

by Hcamper Online Now Jan 2, 2010 at 12:15 PM

      Hi
I will be traveling to Germany May 2010 with partner and (2) bicycles. We will be utilizing train travel approximately 4 times within a 14 day period, always with bikes (and panniers).
      1) Hanover to Hameln (airport to friends/family)
      2) Hameln to Koln
      3) XXXX to Hameln (somewhere near Frankfurt or Heidelburg)
      4) Hameln to Hanover (back to airport)

Is it more economical to purchase train passes in US for Germany travel? Do I need to make sure the passes allow bike travel? When we go on trains with our bikes we need to stay with our bikes. We do not want any train that makes us leave our bikes alone. Is this doable?

      Thanks!
