Hi Im moving to Hamburg for an internship and I'm looking at places to live close to the company ill be working for that is safe for a single woman. The company is located in Ottensen on Elbchaussee. What are the best / safest places to stay in that are at a walkable distance? Is taking public transportation a better option? Ive also looked into a place in Blankenese. Is that safe? Thanks!!!
Within walkable distance are only (mostly) upscale districts, not sure if you can afford living there. That said, Elbchaussee is quite long - about 9 km. You don't say anything about yourself other than that you are female. Are you a student? If so, you could try staying at a dormitory. When I was living in Hamburg, there were two located in Kalckreuthweg. One of which is this: bugenhagen-konvikt.de/start/... You don't need to study theology to stay there, I didn't either and spent a couple of years there. Alternatively, try Altona. Rents are significantly cheaper in Altona than further west.

Blankenese is just fantastic, if not to say magic. If you can afford to live there, do it! But really, it is very, very expensive as it is a suburb where many rich and famous people live.

Kakapo2 is right, however Blankenese is not only Captain's District but has some social housings as well. Ottensen, where the company is located, is more affordable and a little east, closer to Altona. So would the OP stay in Blankenese it would be a short hop with the S-Bahn to get there. I still think it is best to try finding accomodation in one of the dorms if she qualifies. With that said: When I was living there, sometimes British students would show up during vacations asking for a room. But this is not how things work here. Other than in Britain, students remain to be tenants even during the vacs, which means that only very few rooms will be available.
