shopping in Hamburg

by Shakergrandma Online Now Aug 2, 2008 at 7:02 PM

I will be in Hamburg next spring with my husband on a business trip and am wondering where the upscale shopping areas are located. What are the main street names? Also any hotel recommendations?

Around lake Alster: Jungfernstieg, Große Bleichen, Kollonaden. Additionally around Gänsemarkt, and to a lesser extend Mönckebergst. and Spitalerst. As for the hotel: Which price range? Crowne Plaza *** Steigenberger ****

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I have a map and will try hard to find the streets and a hotel near by. We have stayed at the Park Hyatt (loved it) one other time, but it felt so far away from everything. Do you have any thoughts as to a hotel near the shopping areas? Price isn't important--company trip!

Park Hyatt is actually quite centrally located (not far from central station and Möckebergst), but treat yourself and try the Steigenberger Hotel. It's in he same price range and indeed a lot closer to the upscale shopping area: Neuer Wall, Alsterarkaden and so on are all within walking distance. And there's a subway station right around the corner. Take a look here: maps.google.de/maps?ie=UTF-8... Between the "A", your hotel and Gänsemarkt (a little north, the subway station can be found easily) and lake Alster/Jungfernstieg (a little north-east, mind the S-Bahn station), within this triangle, you'll find everything you need.

Wait, Park Hyatt is a 5* hotel I believe, Steigenberger is rated 4*, so it's cheaper, but it's truly a good 4* hotel. I'm sure you'll like it there.

I'm not sure what your budget is but if you already asking for the upscale shopping areas I guess you have quite something to spent also for the hotel. Have a look at these: Sofitel, Alter Wall sofitel.com/sofitel/fichehot... it is quite populare among my collegues and I also arrange for my parents for at weekend. They were very satisfied. The hotel is centrally located. kind of modern fancy should be the east hotel http://www.east-hamburg.de/ my brother recommended it once If you're looking for someting for dinner may be the restaurant "rive" could be an option. It is located at the habour and you have a great view. My brother invited our family once and we had an wonderful evening. http://www.rive-hamburg.de/ Hope this helps ...

another hotel recommendation just came to my mind, even if it isn't really downtown near Jungferstieg and so on ... the new Moevenpick hotel, opend last year I guess, it is in an old reservoir tower and the Schanzenviertel is still very kind of hip, I guess ... moevenpick-hotels.com/en/pub...

Hi, I sent an e- mail to you with my vt-tips on hotels. The design hotel tip might be appropriate to your demands, I guess. Neuer Wall would be the street with most the Design labels, just next to Jungfernstieg. Also Eppendorf and Winterhude have some upscale areas, little smaller and very cute areas with old city houses. Best Chris.

the best location to reside would be "Vier jahreszeien", it is within a short walking distance from all the places that have been mentioned, only 100 m from Jungfernstieg. And it is one of the best horels worldwide.
