We are planning a daytrip from Salzburg to Hallstatt by public transport (we don't drive). What options are available for public transport? We want to leave Salzburg in the morning, stay 2-3 hours, then return to Salzburg. Train or bus? or both? Prices vs convenience of travel?
train is the best option: www.oebb.at in Hallstatt you have to leave the trainstation and take the boat over the lake to Hallstatt, boats come always for the trains

I think arriving in Hallstatt by train/boat early morning is very nice, € 22,50 (+ 2,20 for the boat) you have to change train in Attnang Puchheim, you can do this also via Bad Ischl (first part by bus, about the same time and price), you could return also by bus via Gosau lake (Gosau Gosauer Hof in the Oebb website, not as frequent connection, at post bus interchanges they wait if one bus is delayed). http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp
