I visited Yangshuo in 2007 for 3 days and will return to Guilin in October and stay in a hostel. I want to travel in this area but am a lone traveller. I want some advise. I have 2 weeks in China and this will be my 2nd week. I fly out from HK at the end of my travels, so would 6 nights be too long in Guilin or should I stay maybe 3 and move on. With not much time to spare I do not want to spend my time travelling too much. If there are many places to visit around Guilin then I might find it better relaxing there. If there are places of interest on the route back to HK anyone might recommend that might be an option too
I've been to Guilin once and we went on an organised Dragon air package. We took the river cruise to Yangshuuo which was spectacular and the highlight of the trip. Took a very touristy evening boat trip around Guilin -OK but fairly forgetable, visited some caves which I enjoyed had a look at Elephant Rock and some cliffs with Buddha carvings, visited a pearl factory and a Chinese paiting shop. Guilin is lovely, pleasant, nice hotels, nice places to eat and drink, but personally I woukd say it merited around 3 days. I coukld be wrong due to doing the tour (very rare for us, we are not organized tour people) I did not research it so there may be other sights; there could be hikes and things, but I think 2 or 3 days would be enough.

I recommend you to go to the Longsheng Rice Terraces. October is the harvest season and you see golden field throughout the mountain. Noramlly you could catch the bus provided by the inn on the rice terrace, stay one night there, see the sun rise. Would be a very good experience.

Thanks I am planning to visit. i am staying in a hostel in guilin and exploring from that base. I like the look of this hostel. They even pick you up from Guilin train station and take you to the hostel high up in Tiantou Zu, Dazhai Village. I am keen to visit Ethnic villages and see the terracing although I realise they are a little commercialised these days. this is the place : Jing Keng Guesthouse Has anyone stayed there? IS it worth exploring onward from here ?

Yes, many inns of the terrace can arrange mini-bus to pick you up at the Railway station, normally one in the morning around 9am and one in the afternoon at 1pm. You can either reserve the seat as well as the room; or just the seat and look for the room when you arrive (of course, only during low season.) There are indeed quite a number of inns in the rice terrace, the higher the better as you got better view, and shorter road to see the sun rise in early morning.
