Coming to Guernsey for a week in August. Wondering if we need to hire a car or can you get round easy via bus and walking. Staying in St Martin. Thanks

We were there for only a few days and did not rent a car. We stayed on Vazon Bay on the other side of the island from St. Martin and took the bus most places we wanted to go. The buses are inexpensive and there is a good network of service around the island. I have a route map on my Guernsey travel tip if you want to see it. Depending on where you are in St. Martin, you could be only a mile or so from St. Peter Port. Taxis are an alternative but a pretty expensive one.

St Martin is between the airport and 'Town' as the locals call St Peter Port. You will have some nice paths and lanes to discover as well as cliff walks. Perhaps you can do without a car if you are not planning to go across the island to some nice beaches such as at Vazon or Cobo or further along. The best beaches are on the western side of the island and St Martins is on the south side which is where you find more cliffs. The bus service offers an Ormer Card which you can but in Town at the central bus kiosk. I find this good value as it means you can swipe it for each time and not pay full fare. Look at the details on : hctgroup.org/the_hct_group/c... As already mentioned, the taxi fares are higher than you expect so use buses or shank's pony if you can. A study of the routes and times is sensible beforehand. Be aware also when looking at the times that buses do not run too late in the evening. Parking in Town has and always will be a problem using a car.

""if you are not planning to go across the island to some nice beaches such as at Vazon or Cobo"" perhaps I should have said -- if you are not planning to go across the island etc MANY TIMES during your stay. In other words you are staying in St Martins but want a beach holiday going to one or two specific beaches on the 'other side' of the island. Of course the buses will take you around to these beaches. Try to get to Herm on the ferry and if you enjoy walks then think of doing the walk to shell beach which is on the north eastern side of this small island. Either walk direct across the island or use the cliff path going round the south side. Takes longer but some nice views.
