I am planning a trip for this June to travel from Belize city into Guatemala and down into Honduras. We plan to fly out of the island of Roatan in Honduras to get home. I have done a lot of research on others who have been in this area and not too many people talk about it being unsafe. Does anyone no about safety issues in these areas? Can they be avoided with common sense and standard precautions?

Has anyone hired surfboards along the Pacific coast of Guatemala? I have a few questions...Were hire places easily found and were longboards (9ft +) available? What sort of condition were they in? Were the rates reasonable? Did a large deposit need to be left in case of damage etc? Thanks!

Travelling and donating clothes and toys

Antigua Guatemala Feb 8, 2013 at 12:51 PM

Hello, Im planning a long trip of backpacking through Central and South America with my boyfriend and have been wondering what is 'acceptable' to give to kids and families in need of clothes, books, toys, diapers, school supplies, ect. Also, i will be backpacking, so i can imagine it would be difficult to carry all the extra weight around with me. Has anyone tried buying things IN the country and giving them away there? any suggestions? Also is it acceptable to approach people and give them things?

  • Travel from Guatemala City to Lanquin

    Guatemala Jan 19, 2013 at 5:52 AM

I arrive to GUA on a 1pm flight and am looking to head to Lanquin the same day. I know of a 3pm shuttle from Guat city to Coban but have found out that public buses from Coban to Lanquin stop around 6pm. Does anyone know of any private/alternative transportation options that might get me to Lanquin from Coban after the public buses have stopped running? I have dug around travel guides, blogs, etc and haven't come across a definite answer. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

San Francisco church in Guatemala city

Guatemala City Dec 28, 2012 at 10:30 AM

I have a question concerning the Iglesia de San Francisco in Guatemala ciudad. According to Rough guide the church is famous for its carving of the Sacred Heart (of Jesus), brought from Antigua. But I cannot find this sacred heart (of that church) mentioned or pictured anywhere else on the internet. Is it there, or may Rough Guide be wrong in this case?

Help! Housing near A El Salvador/Antigua El Salvador, Scout Campo Escuela San Jorge Muxbal

Guatemala City Oct 2, 2012 at 12:01 AM

Hello, I'm inquiring for my son who has an opportunity to do some scout volunteering at the Scout Campo Escueal San Jorge but we need very close housing...a shared room, a host family, a safe motel, ...ANYTHING safe (that's key). It needs to be within walking distance or via an easy bus/shuttle ride. I'm clueless as to where to turn. He has to report for training on Oct 14th and we're running out of time for him to take advantage of this opportunity:( Also, if anyone knows any nearby hostels that might work... but we would need daily transportation for 6 weeks to the camp. Any ideas on transportation? Are there local cooperative shuttles that deliver people locally. I don't think we could afford a taxi daily!

Hello, my husband and I and 15 year old are traveling to Antigua and Lake Atitlan for a week in February and I am looking for suggestions for which town to stay in at the lake, which other towns to visit, and accommodation recommendations for our stay on the Lake and in Antigua. Traveling with our daughter, we are hoping for a guest house or other cosy type accommodation where we can feel our daughter will be safe with her own room next to or connected to ours and a friendly owner(s). We like to hike and explore the local culture and markets. Thank you for your suggestions:).

She would fly into Guatemala City airport and be picked up direct by the volunteer organization and driven to Tecpan. Can anyone please advise me regarding any safety or violence issues that I should be aware of in deciding as to whether or not to allow her to participate? Most appreciated.

  • Moving To Antigua

Antigua Guatemala Apr 3, 2012 at 9:50 AM

My wife and I are planning to move to Antigua later this year; she was born and raised in Guate -has lived here in Los Angeles for over 10 years- and we're looking forward to moving to her homeland. I would like some advice on how she could secure a job (she's in business/administration) before we move. I'm curious of the likelihood of doing a Skype/phone interview; that's not too rare in the states but don't know about in Guatemala. At worst case scenario we can stay with her family in Guatemala City until we find work in Antigua but would prefer to bypass this step. Does anyone know of any Guatemalan job boards that we can post a resume'? As for me working, it's my understanding that I would have to wait at least 3 months to get some residency to then apply for a work visa. I'm not sure if that's correct information though. Also, we would just like to meet some people from the area to connect with. If anyone has any great general advice about moving there (or anything else) we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

    GUA to Antigua

    Guatemala Feb 2, 2012 at 6:28 PM

I would like to know if it is easy to get a shared shuttle from Guatemala airport to Antigua. I heard there are kiosks offering this service for about10-15 but am not clear about availability. Do they come and go depending on demand? Can you just join one when you arrive? I will arrive around 2:30pm Sunday and don't want to hang around the airport until 6pm. Would it be better to get a private shuttle? They seem to be about40! The shared shuttle seemed less expensive, safe and easy. I do not speak spanish, unfortunately and don't want to take a taxi since I've heard this could be unsafe.

Car Saftey/Staying Options for a family

Antigua Guatemala Jan 30, 2012 at 9:38 AM

Hi I am taking my family, wife and two kids, to Guatemala for the first time. I wanted to know... How safe it is to rent and drive a car there? Do you think as an American I can follow the road signs to Tikal? What the weather is like during Febuary? What is a good back packing hostel like staying place for a family in a quiet area? Kind of like a house run by a local family. If there is a kitchen that would be great. Thank You

Has anyone travelled to the Mosquitia and Olancho area? I didn't even know about it until I started reading a travel book. Apparently it's still very unspoiled territory, and sounds interesting and adventurous. Maybe too adventurous, I'm not sure, but my interest has been piqued, at least as part of my vacay. Any info/suggestions/warnings?

Departamento de Suchitepéquez Nov 29, 2011 at 8:13 AM

I will be traveling to Guatemala at the end of this year. I have never been before and I am trying to make sure that I don't have anything with me that could get me into trouble. I am currently taking norethindrone (camila) birth control. I was wondering if it is legal in Guatemala. Also same question for IBuprofen and Levonorgestrel.
