Hi, I will be in Macauy on work in early February. I have 2 days to spare post that. Was wondering if it makes sense to make a quick dash to Guangzhou. I have 3 questions (if someone can help answer) 1) How long will it take to go to Guangzhou from Hongkong or Macau (Train would be preferred) 2) Is Guangzhou a city/region rich in culture/architecture? I wanted to see China some day and was wondering if Guangzhou would live up to the idea the world has of Ancient/Old/Rich sultured China 3) Is Guangzhou better than Shenzen for the above I do not want to go to pick rip-offs, pirated CDs, electronics or fake Fendis. I want to see & experience China Thanks Francis
To go from Macau to Guangzhou you would take a bus through Zhuhai. There are buses every hour and it takes about 2 hours (I would allow 2 and a half). From HK you can go by train and again it takes about two hours. Trains leave from Hung Hom station in Kowloon. Guangzhou is an older more established city than Shenzhen so it has a history where SZ has little. Guangzhou was known as Canton and Humen was known as Taiping (first opium wars) is a little South of GZ. It is a little difficult to experience China without someone with local knowledge but it can be done. I lived there for four years and it was a very rewarding experience.

It make sense to go if you can afford or have a VISA to enter China (costly) If you have never been there, expect a experience of a lifetime. I have been there many times these past few years and still find something interesting everytime I return. First off, make sure that your paper work is in order, this meaning getting a multi-entry VISA before you arrive so that you can come and go through borders if need be. I am from the USA and season traveler into China, so my port of entry is in Hong Kong, stay a few nights and get my VISA on demand through Shoestring Travel agency, 2days and off I go. I can take a ferry into Guangzhou or go through Macau and into Zhuhai through the Gongbei border. there is a bus there that can take you to Guangzhou or you can fly into direct from HK. From Macau also , there are many discount flights through Air Asia to fly into Beijing or Shanghai as well. The two cities have cultural rich sites in abundance than Guangzhou. China can not be really seen in two days, even to Guangzhou, so if you can find more time, it would be helpful and the VISA would be worth the price paid. Tour agency sometimes can get package deals with VISA included for a day into China, they also have overnight trips too, so look into this as soon as you get into Macau as a option. Day tour with VISA is about 100 USD, but must stay with the group. cheers tommy x

I see by your profile that you are from Mumbai. It will be better to get a visa before you leave as you have to prove your bank account has a certain balance and that may be harder to do in Hong Kong (they may insist on a special form for instance). I would think that it is better to take a bus from Zhuhai as you will see more but generally it will be industrial areas as you go through Zhongshan and Shunde on the way to GZ.
