Accomodations at the South Rim

by woodneckbeach Online Now May 22, 2007 at 8:09 AM

Can anyone make hotel or cabin recommendations for a family of six to stay at the South Rim? Reviews on the El Tovar Suites or the Powell Suite at Bright Angel would be helpful. What is the fourplex cabin like? Do adjoining rooms exist? Is air conditioning needed in late June? Any suggestions are appreciated.

We stayed at the Maswik Lodge just a couple of weeks ago and found it quite satisfactory. From my experience, you need to book well in advance as all the hotels fill up quickly during the high season.

We were there last June and if you don't already have reservations I doubt you will able to get them at those two places. It was 90 degrees when we were there and AC was a welcome respite at the end of the day. Yavapia Lodge has an east and west building, one side has AC the other doesn't (can't recall which is which). We stayed there and the rooms, while very basic, were great for us and easy walk to the main shopping area, places to eat, and the rim.

We had a great 2 days back in June in the Best Western Squires Inn just minutes outside of the Park. An excellent 4* hotel with quite a lot going on around. Check out my Grand Canyon tips. Have a great stay!

Your best bet at this time would be to check for availability on-line at www.xanterra.com. Rooms book far in advance but, if you check very very often you may pick up a cancelled room. A/C will be a must! It will be very hot during the day. Their web site will state what accommodations have A/C. Bright Angel Lodge and the cabins do not have A/C. Second best would be to stay outside the Park. Good Luck on your plans!
