Granada February/March

by nbahrenb Online Now Jan 24, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Hello,
I am traveling to Granada with two others at the end of February/beginning of March to visit a family member abroad. We will be primarily staying in Granada with hopes for day trips around Andalucia.

I am looking for any recommendations for hotels, dining, day trips and the best way to utilize the 10 days we are there! We are open and flexible and are ready to explore all the region has to offer. We are looking to stay somewhere hotel, inn, whatever that can accommodate three people and is safe and clean.

It may be rather late in the game to get a reservation at the Parador de San Francisco de Granada (parador.es/en/parador-de-gra.... You can try. It is a wonderful hotel, housed in a former 15th century monastery; it has a fine restaurant, too. The Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand & Isabel were buried here, by the own request; you see their tomb markers still in place. They have since been moved to the Royal Chapel of Granada, which is one place you can visit in the town.

Should you stop at the Parador, you will be on the Alhambra Hill, with its Moorish palaces and Palace of Charles V. A visit to these beautiful sights (www.alhambradegranada.org/en) is the prime reason anyone comes to Granada. It is a wise idea to book your ticket for the Alhambra palaces online before arriving. This will save time, no standing in a queue.

Hotel Alhambra Palace is another choice on the Alhambra Hill; it has a fine restaurant, too (h-alhambrapalace.es/default-....

Be certain to visit el Albaicin, the residential area across the river from the Alhambra Hill. There are many fine restaurants (http://abenhumeya.com/en/ubicacion; miradordemorayma.com; lastomasas.com) located there. The Mirador de San Nicolas offers splendid views of the Alhambra; the small church facing the plaza is charming.

You can take day trips to Sevilla and Córdaba. Sevilla is really a city with many sights; and it deserves several days to do it justice. Should you wish to to stop in Sevilla for a few nights Hotel Casa Imperial (http://www.casaimperial.com/) is great!

Córdoba is a day trip town, with the mosque/cathedral and the Alcázar (castle) as the main attractions. It is quite the charming town for roaming its streets. We enjoyed lunch at Restaurante Patio de la Judería (www.patiodelajuderia.com) in the old Jewish section of town.

This is a fabulous region of Spain. Enjoy!

We used the Hotel Cerro del Sol, in Cenes de la Vega which is a couple of km from the Alhambra. If you're touring by car it has the very big advantage that you can easily get into Granada when you want to but it doesn't require you drive in. Granada is not an easy place to drive into. To visit Granada, park at the Alhambra and either walk down into the city (a very pleasant walk) or get on of the frequent buses.

I've just looked up reviews of the hotel again and I'm pleased to see it still reviews fantastically well.
