Unique hotel in Granada

by maestrousmc Online Now May 17, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Hello guys! The first stop in my trip to Andalucía this September is Granada and I'll be spending 3 days and two night there. I've found several hotels in the city but haven't found anything truly unique and special. I like accomodations with character and history. For instance, while in Sevilla I'm going to stay in a monastery two hours north for two days. I'm not looking for anything exact. Just unique. All suggestions are welcome -- regardless of whether or not you've stayed there. Thanks is advance!

I think a special place to stay in Granada would be in a cave. Don't know if there are hotels as such which have cave rooms but there are apartments or holiday homes that you can rent out which are caves. Cueva is cave in Spanish. for example: holidaylettings.co.uk/costa-... I just typed in in English something like holiday cave Granada and web sites pop up

Thanks a ton guys! So I took Rosario's advice and googled "hotel con encanto Granada" and came up with so many possibilities -- to include Julie's cave recommendation. I know Karl is looking for the same and I found this site: vivegranada.com/cgi-bin/form... I'm a big fan of apartment rentals and it looks like these have options. I'm excited!

Have you considered a small apartment in the Albacin - the old Arab quarter? We stayed in a great little place less than a minute's walk from the Mirador San Nicolas that overlooks the Alhambra, it was always lively with ad hoc guitars and music, sunset is especially magic. Our apartment had a dinky little tower with a view of the Alhmabra, you could walk into town easily or catch one of the small buses that tootle around all day (walk down, bus up was best). We ate dinner just about every night in the square by the apartment, watching the tour groups being paraded through like sheep. Details on my Granada page.

Thanks for all the awesome ideas guys! I've found several cave apartments and a lot of really cool apartments oozing with charm and history. I'm totally excited about this! Now my only question is layout. A majority of these places are in the Sacromonte and Albaicín. I know that Albaicín in essentially centrally located but the caves in Sacromonte seem to be away from everything. I have no problem walking 3 or 4 miles to get somewhere but after a few copas I'd rather not. For instance I found a cave located at Verea de Enmedio nº 89 Sacromonte C.P. 18010 GRANADA. Is that pretty much isolated? Thanks in advance guys.

Hi Bill, For pedestrian distances you can use mappy.com. Use the address from the "cave" and then one of the hotels close to the city center to get an idea of how far away you are. I am probably going to the Hotel El Ladrón de Agua, assuming I survive Pamplona again. These old bones like a bit of comfort, although those caves look cool. Karl

Karl, thanks for adding to my arsenal of resources! I was just in the middle of trying to map everything and it couldn't have come at a better time.

By the way, I was hovering over El Ladrón de Agua for quite some time. I've read a lot of really favorable reviews on it and seriously considered staying there.

Sacromonte really isn't far. It is right by the Albaicin and I think you would really enjoy the area. It is very close to the centre though you have to walk up a steep hill to do so. Exercise is good for you ;)

You're right Julie. The more I read about all the food that's waiting for me in Andalucía, adding a morning walk from Sacromonte to Albaicín to my schedule doesn't seem like a bad idea at all. :o)

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review... I stayed at this Carmen which is 3 or 4 minutes walk from the Alhambra. It is a small hotel only having about 5 rooms and the owner is a bit fussy, but it's really really nice. You can walk up to the Alhambra Palace Hotel which I am sure is a lot more expensive and won't be so nice, and have drinks on the balcony and be grateful that you're staying somewhere with more charm! I have posted the link to what it says on Trip Advisor about this hotel, but it also has it's own website. The owner will pick you up at the airport for about the same as a taxi (but he knows where he's going) and less stress than getting a bus!

Just came from a stay at the Casa Morisca - at the base of the Alhambra. An old Moorish manor house - small and in a great location with a range of rooms based on the view and size - we had one that had been a reception area but liked the little one (servants quarters?)as well - great view of the Alhambra from the loo! Also close to a bus stop and walking distance from the Alhambra and the Old sections of the city. - Rod
