Gold Coast in spring is warm. Average temps are mid-20s (Celcius) during the day into the low teens at night. It's not unheard of for the temperature to hit the high-20s or low-30s though. Humidity is still fairly low at this time of year though. Melbourne in spring is a bit cooler than the Gold Coast, but still warm. Average temps are high-teens to low-20s. October is the rainiest month of the year.

November will be a lot warmer than September in both places. The temperatures can be extremely variable in Melbourne in November. I have known it to be Maximums of about 17 and really wet up to maximums of 30 and be swimming for Melbourne Cup weekend on the first weekend of November through to the end of November. It's very hard to predict.

This year seems to be 'normal' weather for Melbourne after ten or twelve years of drought. As others have stated Melbourne is at its wetest in late Oct early Nov. Our weather comes in fronts so typically you will have a couple of adverse days and then four or so of milder/good weather. September in Melbourne is when the weather starts a gradual change. Temps around 24ÂșC can occur but I would expect up to 18 is more usual. Don't know anything of Cairns weather.
