Transportation

by wonglaipeng Online Now Mar 1, 2012 at 1:09 AM

Travelling to Gold Coast with my 3 kids ages 15,10(Boys) & 7 (Girl) from 26th May (night) to 29 May 2012 (Afternoon). In terms of savings, I would like to know which is the best form of transportation to take and type of tickets to purchase if we travel from Gold Coast airport domestic arrival (with return) to our lodging in Surfers Paradise and from Surfers Paradise to Seaworld & Wet & Wild Park (with return) during the 4 days stay.

A lot of theme parks etc run free shuttle buses from most airports. I would contact your hotel for more info. Cheers

From the Airport, catch bus #702 outside the domestic Arrivals terminal of GC Airport. It is the cheapest option, and there is usually luggage space available on-board the bus. Take #702 bus back to the Airport (running in the opposite direction). I do not recommend the Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle passes like the Freedom Passes, especially, as your itinerary is not crammed with tons of different sights/attractions, where the pass may turn into good value. From Surfers Paradise to Seaworld, take bus #750. From Surfers Paradise to Movieworld or Wet 'n' Wild, take bus #TX2. The best website to look at is the Journey Planner: http://jp.translink.com.au/ because it tells you everything you want to know - Which bus to take, which bus stop to get on the bus, how much does it cost, etc.

Thanks for the info, Jarrah-Girl. Do I have to buy the ticket first before I board the bus 702 or I can pay upon boarding the bus?

You can pay when you get onto the bus (same with any public bus). There is a Go Card available as well (tap on and tap off every time you get on and off the bus), which you can purchase that means you'll pay cheaper fares, than if you use cash, but, for such a short stay, I'm not sure whether you want to purchase them. If you plan to come back to the Gold Coast in the future, it might be a good idea, but, maybe not, if you don't intend to return. If you do, you can purchase them from the Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle customer service counter at Gold Coast Airport. A free and helpful booklet which you can pick up from the Airport is the Get Around Guide - See the link at the bottom of this page: gcshuttle.com.au/sit_gcs_gag... I'm not sure if you are familiar with the Gold Coast or not, but, I found the map on Page 8-9 (Page 10 shows the main bus route specifically through Surfers Paradise) to be useful, as you can work out how many more areas the #702 bus will need to pass before you reach Surfers Paradise (i.e. the bus will go from Coolangatta through Currumbin, Palm Beach, Burleigh Heads, etc.). When you're on the bus, you'll notice signs on the road indicating which suburb you're passing through, so, it's easy to work out whether you're nearly there or not.

Unfortunately, sometimes the #702 bus does not have luggage space (they usually have an area with a large space in the middle of the bus, with a rack on top for luggage), which means that you may need to sit separately. On the journey from the Airport to the GC, we had a bus with the luggage space, but, on the way back to the Airport, we had to put our luggage beside us. Please note that the #702 bus will not take you to the doorstep of your hotel. It only stops at specific bus stops in Surfers Paradise (same with all other areas), so, use the Journey Planner and put in "Gold Coast Airport" as your 'location' and your hotel's address as the 'destination', and it'll tell you which bus stop you should get off at, and then, you can use Google Maps to work out the best route to your hotel. It usually isn't a very far walk from the bus stop. Most likely, the bus stop that you get off at will be the same bus stop you'll be using to catch the bus to the theme parks, and the bus stop on the other side of where you got off the bus will most likely be the bus stop where you can catch the bus back to the Airport, but, of course, it is always best to check the bus timetable to be sure, as you do not want to be waiting at the wrong bus stop!
