Public Transport and other questions!

by JohnnySpangles Online Now Apr 10, 2011 at 2:06 AM

Hi, I'm coming to Goteborg in May for the Swedish Speedway Grand Prix with my 14 year old son...but trying to do it on a budget. We'll have two days to also discover Goteborg and I was thinking about going to the art galleries (which I think are free) and a few other central things....I have lots of questions! 1) What would be a good idea for something to do on a Sunday Morning in Goteborg? 2) I'm a bit confused about the public transport system as the Vasttrafik website is not very clear...Do 14 year olds travel free on all public transport, or is it only if I buy a one-day or three day card?...Is there a two day card? 3) I can't find a downloadbale tram map..any links? 4) Is it best to travel to the Uwelli Stadium by tram...or is that a bad idea for big crowd events...can you walk there from the centralstation Thanks for any help!

Trek up to Keillers Park. Quite an adventure, and a most unusual setting! Also look into visiting tranquil Marstrand, and it's lovely castle, plus possibly the Volvo museum in Gothenburg itself.

Tram maps here: mappery.com/G6teborg-Tram-Ma... and here: urbanrail.net/eu/got/gotebor... Not downloadable but you can right click/save image as and then print, or print the screen itself.

Thanks for answers so far.. Looks like I might buy a day card for 65 SEK or 3 Day for 130 SEK...does this mean my son travels free with me and doesn't need a ticket?...Are these day tickets generally available or do you have to have an account....see text from Vasttraffik website ..

Yes, if you buy the day card or the 3 days card your son can travel on your ticket. If you choose single tickets he will be a "skolungdom" traveling for 19 SEK. Adult single ticket is 25 SEK. Gothenburg is quite walkable so I guess where you are staying and what you plan to do will be something to consider before you decide which ticket to buy. Maybe not a budget activity, but I am sure a 14 year old could have fun for a whole day at Liseberg (http://www.liseberg.com/en/home/). If you have nice weather during your visit Slottsskogen might be nice, it is a park with a small zoo with nordic animals and when I visited it was all for free.

Thanks, Looks like Liseberg may be an option for the Saturday afternoon. I like the idea of that big wooden roller coaster! Take your point about walking....which I think we will do on the Sunday. Regards Johnny

The Balder wooden roller coaster is great! I have rarely laughed as much as when I "took off" from my seat in the ups and downs :))) It's not a budget thing but yes, Liseberg is a wonderful park and I'm not saying that because I used to work there. A trip to the archipelago (using your tram card since you can go by tram to Saltholmen where boats leave) is nice too, and a bit closer than wonderful Marstrand already mentioned. Slottsskogen is a park which is indeed still for free, and Nordic animals might be nice, but it's perhaps not the most exciting for a 14-year-old, although it IS where all locals go to play a Swedish baseball-looking kind of game, picnic and other things. Sometimes there are free concerts too. One thing that could be fun is perhaps the Maritiman museum with a submarine and other ships to visit along the river. You can check my Göteborg page for more info if you like (I grew up there). Ullevi is just a few blocks from both the Central station and major city centre sights so it is very walkable.
