Hello, With family, will be picking up new Volvo car in Goteburg--1st week April 2005. We plan to drive for 3 days around Goteburg. Please advise best drive sites and places to see as well as hostels for accommodation. Are hostels safe for kids? Not really willing to pay hotel rates, any other budgetary accommodation suggestions? Thanks!
I live 1 hour north of Goteborg. Taking trams and buses is the best way around Goteborg. Your car would be a nuisance if you will be staying right in town. You must pay to park even at hotels. They are also in huge highway construction mode at the moment not to mention Goteborg is quit circular in a way. IF you plan to get outside of town you will need a car i.e. Copenhagen (2.5-3hrs.drive). Walking around particularly up and down the Avenue(main street) would suit. The main museum is at the top end. The rose garden(also on the Avenue) may be just coming into bloom at the time you're there. Catch a ferry ride around the water right across from the train station if weather permits. Take the kids to Liseburg amusement park. All this is right in the middle of town Hotels: If possible stay on a weekend as rates sometimes are cut as much as half. Hotels in general are exspensive in Sweden. Hostels in Sweden I have heard are good but I have not stayed in one.

Hm...do you mean you want to drive to scenic places OUTSIDE Göteborg? In that case, the car is fine, and I can suggest places like Lysekil with its archipelago scenery, and Nordens Ark zoo for rare animals for the children to see. As for Göteborg city centre, I grew up there, and it is a constant battle with one-way streets and road works. Now they are also building a new tunnel by the river so it is even messier than usual. Park the car somewhere around the hostel and use the trams or walk. As for hostels, I have never stayed in any in Göteborg since I lived there, but in several others in Sweden, and Swedish hostels are fine for families. www.stfturist.se and www.svif.se are the two organisations with hostels. Just search for the ones in Göteborg. Slottsskogen is for instance in a good location for the children as it is near a big park with some animals.

Thank you for your response. I would assume that the drive to Copenhagen is scenic. Can you give me an idea of what types of scenery are seen while driving? How much is the average cost of gasoline? How many hours drive from Goteburg to Stockholm?

Very informative, thank you. We plan to see Goteburg for one or 2 days and then drive elswhere. How long is the drive to the archipelago and to the other places that you've mentioned? Are there hotels/hostels near the archipelago? Not knowing where we are at the end of each night, is it cheaper to book a hotel/hostel a few hours before checking in?

No, the price is the same regardless if you book in advance or not. I can't say I know of any hostels IN the archipelago (only B&Bs) in Göteborg as most hostels are north of Göteborg. Having said that, the archipelago is so near the city that it shouldn't be a problem. Just catch the tram with the end stop "Saltholmen" where you get off and catch any boat. Driving to Copenhagen is scenic. The archipelago gives way to sandy beaches south of Göteborg. Varberg is a town good for a break (see dave_21's page on the fortress by the sea) even if it is more lively in summer. There is also a brand new appointment of a World Heritage here in the form of a radio station in the village of Grimeton. If you could, try to stick to the old coastal road through that province, as it is much more scenic than the E6 motorway. Especially between Halmstad and Falkenberg where there are airplane museums and all sorts of nice twists and turns. South of Halmstad comes the Hallandsåsen ridge which is scenic. Here you can stop at the little town of Båstad, famous for its international tennis every summer. There is also a picturesque town called Laholm just before the ridge. On the other side of the ridge is the next province, with a nice peninsula called Kullahalvön (north of Helsingborg). You can see it in pages from Mölle and Arild.
