Which places would be nice to see - old castles, churches, monasteris, villages, towns etc. - during one day trips from Glasgow. I´ll stay for two weeks there ( 16th June - 2nd July 2005 ) and I would be happy to get to know places to go and "fill" (or even fulfill?) some of the days during that holiday. I am happy to do some short trekking, too. Thank you for your advice - Maarit from Finland (with not much money)
Two Things immediately come to mind -- Edinburgh and Loch Lomond! Both are a "must visit" :-)

Take a trip to Stirling and visit the castle. I thought it was lovely and the views are spectacular!

Take the train to Largs, the ferry over to Millport and rent a bicycle to go around the island. It's small and flat but has wonderful scenery. Don't forget Glasgow itself which has some wonderful and interesting buildings.

I agree with all the suggestions given and would like to add a visit to the Falkirk Wheel if you have time. You might also manage a visit to Arrochar (which would also pass Loch Lomond) for a bit of climbing or on to Inverary for the castle. The scenery on route is spectacular. sylvdawn

Some very good ideas! Go by train from Central station to the Ayrshire coast and you can even take the Seacat to Belfast. Low level trains at Central will take you to Lanark. From Queen Street station travel North and East from the main platforms and low level trains(west) go to Helensburgh and Balloch (Loch Lomond). Go to Buchanan Street bus station for many more interesting destinations, the buses are cheaper for longer journeys. The weather is pretty poor today but hopefully it will brighten up for your stay. Have a great time.
