OK, I will be meeting some friends in Glasgow on a Saturday night in May, and I'd like to gather some opinions from you experienced Glaswegians on a few restaurants I've picked out (just based on their websites): DiMaggio's on Royal Exchange Square L'Ariosto at 92-94 Mitchell Street La Tasca at 39-43 Renfield Street Good or bad, I'd like to know what people think--I'm leaning toward DiMaggio's, but I'm open to suggestions (must be reasonably priced, family atmosphere, veggie options). Thanks very much! Tara
Tara, I think VT member Lisa Steph (LieStef) might be able to help you out a bit there. I believe she is from Glasgow or nearby and so she might have a better perspective of the area than people who have visited Glasgow.

DiMaggios is terrible I'm afraid. Its basically a slightly more upmarket Pizza Hut!! La Tasca is quite nice nbut if you want real good tapas come to Cafe Andaluz in the west end (2mins from Hillhead underground)

I have to agree on the DiMaggio's review - it is really a family pizza place and not much more (and I should know... my brother used to work there). There are loads of great eating places in the city centre and in the west end. The Tron arts complex is good value - but check it out with some locals - it's been a while since I've eaten out in Glasgow - but I've never been disappointed.

well I guess it depends what you're looking for. I ate at DiMaggios with a group of about 5 others and we all really enjoyed our meal. And there was more than just pizza on the menu. As far as I remember there were various pasta dishes & one of the girls had salmon. We only went there because it had come strongly recommended to one of the party. But then I like Pizza Hut so maybe us hillbillys from the country aren't as sophisticated in our choice of restaurants! Not been to the other two.

Go to www.5pm.co.uk (to book/ look at menus etc) I`m sure you would enjoy all those mentioned.

Wow, 5pm is a great website! Thanks for the link. Now I've found several other places I want to try, during my less-than-24-hour stop in Glasgow. :) Better eat fast! Thanks, Tara

None of your restaurant's jump out as being veggie. I agree about Di Maggio's, nothing to write home about. L'Ariosto is a nice traditional Italian place, but fairly expensive. La Tasca disappointed me last time I was in, it's definitely gone downhill, food-wise. Still a good atmosphere, though. What I'd recommend is Mao's, on the corner of, I think, Wilson St and Brunswick St in the city centre (the merchant city area). Although it's an Irish mini-chain (?), it's kind of Pacific Rim fusion, with terrific fresh ingredients. I've been there a few times and have never had a bad meal.

Hi Londonlover :-) Gotta agree - one pasta place in Glasgow (for me anyways) is the same as the rest and yeah DiMaggios is just another "jumped up Pizza Hut"! You may wanna try the Chinese place that I've listed in my Scotland Homepage - all you can eat Chinese/European place - "China Buffet" - EXCELLENT - in terms of everything (including vegetarian) and the atmosphere is "crackin'!" There are soo many good restaurants in Glasgow, but I eat we eat at The China Buffet often because it's THAT good! I hope you enjoy your stay in Glasgow. Have tonsa fun. L4H PS - There are some nice places too in the West End - Liestef will deffo help you out there when she comes on board, but I personally prefer the City Centre.

Hmm, I'm getting a definite impression that La Tasca's not the place to go these days (I heard the same about the location in Edinburgh). Thanks for the heads-up, since it looks deceptively good on their website. I also read about a place called 28 St Vincent that looks very stylish--a bit pricey, but maybe good for lunch? I do like all these ethnic foods, but I feel like I should eat at least one meal at a Scottish/British focused restaurant while in town. :) Of course, being vegetarian, I probably have limited options in that kind of food, but it looks like there's always one or two veggie options on most menus. Thanks, everyone! Tara

Awww top answer Liestef - I forgot how trendy the West End for Asian/Indian food is, tops, being the Ashoka - aaaamazing *licks lips here now :-S*. Also, Creme De La Creme do a "Buffet Night" also with vegetarian on the menu, plus there's the Pakora Bar (unsure if it's still there), but really, all of the places we've given you londonlover, try some of them, we are sure you won't be disappointed. No matter where you choose, the atmosphere alone will be tops, so enjoy yourselves, order, relax, an chill. Remember to let us know how things go. If not, me and Lisa will make yeez a good plate a haggis, neeps an mashed tawtees - awwwwww scrumptious!!!!! Good luck once again. Hazel :-)

Liestef - pmsl here - BARS & BRAS - in some cases, both fulla the same thing really eh - pairs a these (( . )) (( .)) - sorry no offence intended - but true! The Forge - don't wear anything by "Burberry" you could be mistaken for a "NED" and the lunches stretch to McDonalds, Greggs (no bad) the ASDA cafe (pure mince!) and a few other places that I wouldn't touch with a 10ft bargepole. Haggis - I LOVE TO DEATH with mashed turnip, heaps of it, and mashed potatoes. I think it would therefore be a good idea to all bail up to ma place and have a "Scottish Night" - NOTE: u MUST bring your own Parliamo book - lolololololol rotflapmp *blush* Funneee - nice to have some laughter brought to a topic!

Oh Jeez oh! :-s My diet is oot the windaw noo. Greggs r bringing their strawberry tarts into season - and I can't be doin' with one - I HAVE to buy the four in a box, enjoyed when all the jam 'n' cream go over yer face, cause they can't be eaten daintily. Sausage rolls r indeed, scrummy yummy in yer tummy. Oh - have them on a buttered burnt roll - with brown sauce - or a Scotch pie on a roll. Now - you haven't lived till you've tasted that. God, ma tummy's rumblin' here, I have to go. Speak soon guys. *leaves in a daze cause she has none of the food listed above in stock* H xoxox

Hi Lisa and Hazel, Boy, you've both given me so many ideas, my head is spinning. :) Thanks, though! Unfortunately, I'll have to forgo the haggis since I'm vegetarian, but I have heard that veggie haggis is available in some places, so maybe I'll give that a try. I will be in a bit of a hurry while in Glasgow, so I'll have to check out Gregg's bakery--I love breads and sweets, so it sounds very appealing! Thanks for the help, girls! Tara

Ugh! now my mouth is watering for a Scotch pie [never tried it in a roll but there is always a first time!] or a sausage roll.. I have immense trouble walking past Greggs without going in sometimes!! But its definitely good for a quick lunch snack when you're in a hurry But you can keep the Haggis!!

Where is the food censor when all these women are making everyone's mouth water by their detailed description of the many foods.....sheesh. Call the cops....these three (Lisa, Hazel and Tara !! ) needs to be "pun"ished for making everyone drool just thinking of the various food items being mentioned here. Now I have to book a trip to Scotland just to go there to "eat". Well, maybe then that way I will atleast put on some weight....he he. Tara, hope you have a wonderful trip to Glasgow.

Awwwww...a Mars bar ??....hmmm, being a Martian myself, I didnt know that our bars have found its way to Glasgow !!!. Tara, am a vegetarian too !!. You will be an ideal travel partner for me then !!..ha ha......we can starve together while traveling in those parts of the world where the word vegetarian doesnt exist. Try Morocco for instance. Well, atleast we have some decent options in Greg's from what I hear. GK

Hey Y'all Lols @ the replies in our "food discussion forum", yeah Tara, it would indeed be excellente if you just give up your "veggie search" as suggested by Lisa, as when you come to Glasgow, you are MOS' DEFFO in for some vital scran! (= top tasting food). I had to laugh when I lived in the States, because all the ex Glasgow Pat's when coming home went on about their high cholestrol, and I was like, "Hey! Wait a minute therr - puleeeeze.*tttttt* Are you guys tryin' to tell me that when yooz get home, the first place yooz pass is like a proper chippy sellin' FRITTERS (VT please provide me with a bib at this point - tyvm) salted and mega vinegar(ed) up and you're droolin' that much your tongue is cleanin' the chippie floor????" All that talk made them even more excited about comin' home, bag-a-chips, pickles, and Lisa, the Asda sell tinsa haggis hons, you can buy it - I make my own haggis 'n' neeps pie - it's gone b4 it's even served. Guys, try it - it's completely crucial edibles! SUPERB!!!! Enjoy Hazel xoxox

Hey, GK, looks like we can sympathize about our limited food choices together! :) That's why I tend to gravitate toward Italian restaurants wherever I go. :) I can imagine Morocco doesn't have many alterantives for us, either. :) Maybe we should try India! I've been veggie for about 12 years now, so I'd probably have a case of severe indigestion if I tried to eat a platter of meat in Scotland. :) But I do have the occasional seafood, so I can still try a chippy shop. Between that, Greggs, and the deep-fried Mars bars, I'll probably do ok! :) Tara

Tara, it appears you have a better choice than me then. I am a strict vegetarian but I can eat dairy products and when the hen's look the other way, their eggs too before they become chickens or for that matter chicks !!!!. For a vegetarian, I hate salads ..tsk tsk...unless Olive Garden opens a salad bar at every place I travel. For the love of God, why cant McDonalds have some veggie food on their menu. They seem to have an outlet every few yards even in Antarctica selling their big beefy burgers and making people get from large to larger. Now if only they can have a veggie burger in McD's (just like the British and some European outlets do......ummm...they are tasty !!!!). Asia is without a doubt the best place for veggies. In Europe, Greece is okay since they have a bit of variety. The next time I go to Morocco, am packing a separate bag for veggie food items.....jeez !!!, I cant stand that sight of cus cus anymore. Even the very mention of cus cus sends me running to the emergency ward these days !!!. I ate more cus cus in 2 weeks in Morocco than an average human being eats in his/her entire life !!!. Yes, and that includes the after life too.. he he...so much for cus cus. Tara, if we go to Glasgow together sometime, we will ask Lisa and Hazel to cook for us...he he.....yes, of course veggie food....no hidden agenda there. We will have our "food sensors" up and running all the time !!!!

Heya all you mad VT noshheads! *walks in COMPLETELY in her element, 'cause guys, guess where I was 2day?????* G R E G G S !!!! Can I get a whoop! whoop!? A high five, or wella slap my thigh ( ;-) the last part much appreciated from Matt McC - *faints*) So, in my "restaurants" forum, I will upload the piccy that I PROUDLY snapped of today at 3pm, it was still busy. Lisa hons, the tinned haggis is "the beans" - I've never seen a "live one" lols, but give me meat anyday instead of this veggie stuff. Steak, Chicken, Lamb (oh! a Lamb Bhoona), chops, bacon, T-bone, Sirloin, PROPER square Lorne sausage but NO FISH - absolutely none - eeeeeyuch - dissssgusting! Now Lisa - I'm off to the chippy to order us up a haggis supper 4 you hons, and I'll have 2 fritters and 2 pickles, no! make that the whole jar - hee hee (plenty a salt and vinegar) PS - "Gregg" was askin' for ye! Byeee Hazel

Breakfast at 4 p.m ??....hmm.......I think too much haggis has gotten onto Lisa now. Time to turn into a vegetarian then Lisa ( just like me and Tara !!!. ) **makes a mental note to send Lisa a 24 hour clock for her next birthday that would show AM and PM clearly so that she can have her breakfast at the AM like the rest of the world does !! ****

That was truly inspirational to have Greggs as a top eating place in Glasgow! I checked out lols4hols page and the picture is lovely! It`s exactly what visitors are looking for as they pad the pavements. Another restaurant tip is to go earlier for the" pre-theatre menu "which is much better value.

I know Hazel's is a typo, but just cudnt pass the opportunity to take a 'poke'.......Lisa hen ??... am sure you meant Hun.......but if Lisa is a hen..he he...one has to wonder whether she lays her own eggs for her own chicken !!!!. Thank God, am far away, otherwise, I guess I would also end up getting a good "pastie"ing for this.

Hey, you helpful locals. Have you any info left to help Petit_Prince (Daniel) find his way about Glasgow? He has posted in this Glasgow forum especially to find out the best place to buy a bridie!

Oh dear Mr MacFAIL!!!!! Quote from u: "He has posted in this Glasgow forum especially to find out the best place to buy a bridie!" Just what ARE u all about? You claim to be a "Glaswegian" and you mention the word "Bridie?????" You obviously need a check up from the neck up m8, and it's pretty obvious you'd be about as much help as a hoover wi' ashthma to any VT'er, because Greggs stoaped daein' bridies yonks ago - they upgraded to "Steakbakes", man, you're SO outta touch *visualises nice "Tim but Dim" here and bursts into hysterical laughter* Family fortunes rejection buzzer goes off to Mr MacFAIL - well, 4 being exactly that! *bridie? a bridie? OMG - aul men ate thame* :-))))))) L4H
