Gibraltar temp pass for South African passport holder

by lizdiver Online Now May 15, 2010 at 2:33 PM

My fiance and I are having our wedding reception in Mallorca, Spain but due to certain regulations one of the easiest places for us to get married is Gibraltar. I am a South African citizen but have both a Spanish residency card and a UK VISA, my fiance is a British citizen. My mother has both a British passport and a Spanish residency card so getting her to Gibraltar is not the issue. The problem seems to be my dad, who, like me is traveling on a South African passport and holds a Spanish residency card. He does however NOT have a UK VISA. Does anyone know a VISA, form or loophole that I can try to get my dad across La Lina and into Gibraltar for a few hours to see me get married in the registry office? I really would appreciate any help I can get in the matter as I am getting married in July and have only just realized that La Lina have changed their boarder control procedures. Thanks Liz

There is NO loophole you can use, as a S. African citizen requires a visa to visit Gibralter even if he is resident in Spain; but he has plenty of time before July, all he needs to do is apply to a British Embassy/consulate in Spain or to the London Passport Office: http://www.gibraltar.gov.uk/visa.php

The changes for South African nationals took place around a year ago, there was a grace period for three months that Visas where not needed if they had previously visited either Gibraltar or UK, and had proof(stamp in their passport). They now do require a visa. Note that to enter Gibraltar on a UK visa, this visa MUST be minimum for a year. The six months Visa for UK is NOT accepted. My recomendation to you is to contact your nearest British consulate in Spain and get a Visa. Your mother will need her passport, she cannot use the residence card to enter Gibraltar. You must also bring your residence card to enable you to return to Spain. Email me if you want more info.
