want to rent a car in Germany in Sept for about 1 week. any tips on companies, what to avoid, recommendations? should I pick up the extra insurance or is using an amex card sufficient?
To rent a car in Germany, you need a valid driver’s license from your home state or province. The legal driving age in Germany is 18, but usually drivers have to be over 21 to rent a car. A few car rentals request an international driver’s license, so check before you go; if you need an international drivers license, you can easily get it at any AAA location. I have very good experience with Europcar. It even has a possibility to hire a car in germany and deliver it back in another city or even country. Have fun in Germany!

I have posted this reply before but I think it's worth posting again... We just rented a car for one week (June 2012). Picking up in Berlin and returning to Munich.188USD. We used Gemut Travel to book the rental for us. They are a US company based in Ashland Oregon, who I had read about on VT Germany forum. They were so helpful and explained the pros and cons of renting vs train travel as well as advised us on extra costs that we might incur...parking, gas, taxes a vignette sticker to take the car into Austria. They guarantee the lowest prices. They will discuss with you insurance costs as well and recommend not taking out additional insurance. We did not take out the insurance thru AVIS (we never insure thru the rental companies), and confirmed with our Am EX credit card what they cover. We ended up with a diesel (non-automatic Renault Scenic) which saved us quite a bit on gas. I highly recommend paying the extra for a GPS! It was so nice to be able to stop wherever we wanted and to see things we'd never see on a train. gemut.com/car-rentals/rental... Read more: VT Forum temporarily unavailable

inspect the car . fotograph of any damage or any thing not right inside and out. have clerk note and sign on your contract. save all toll road receipts and bring them home with you. if your credit card is charged later on because some one says you did not pay a toll you can send the credit card a copy of your receipt and often have the charge credited to you.
