I am new to this forum - any help would be much appreciated. We have 4 days in Germany - starting in Stuttgart where we fly into, picking up a car and then driving back to Calais on return home to Scotland. Want to make best of trip, we like history. Help with nice but not expensive accommodation - although one night in somewhere really nice, exclusive, peaceful historical would be great. Best places to shop for great German products, Villroy Boch etc Are Lindberg/Starck designer spectacles a good purchase in Germany compared with UK? That is something for a co member to get their teeth into! Donna I promise I will make my first post on my return.
Welcome to VT! I didn't find prices UK/Germany to be much different for anything, to be honest. But I haven't looked for expensive stuff either, so perhaps another member can contribute. I'm not quite sure of your timings. Do you mean you have 4 full days in Germany before you drive to Calais, or that the 4 days will include the drive to Germany? I ask because if it's the latter then much of your 4 days might be spent in France. If you have time, I'd definitely suggest Speyer & Heidelburg, Nuremberg, Bamber and Wuerzberg (and Regensburg and Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, perhaps). All lovely and all stuffed with history. But they are not on a direct route to Calais. Perhaps you might think of Strasbourg>Reims>Rouen? Or perhaps work northwards and go via Brugge (Bruges) or Gent?

Germany is a big country, with the points of interest often hundreds of miles apart. If you start in Stutgart, IU would suggest on the southern part of Germany - which is usually the region with better weather - and visit the north next time. Places of interest in the south include: the Black FForest region, Freiburg (and Colmar in France across the Rhine), Tübingen, Augsburg, Munich, the Lake of Constance, Würzburg, Mainz and the road along the Rhine to Cologne etc. Get as much information as you can from internet and then try to match it with your personal interests.

Welcome to VT. On your way to Calais you could go to Mettlach, a small town in the southwestern corner. Not well-known but in a beautiful area with the loop of the river Saar. Mettlach is home of Villeroy and Boch and there is an outlet shopping centre right in the town centre. I found some very good bargains there. There are several shops, not only for Villeroy and Boch but also other brand names. tourist-info.mettlach.de/eng... is the link to Mettlach in English. "Ceramics and the Loop of the Saar" - Mettlach by christine.j tells you a bit more about the area.

Well, if you go via Mettlach (for the V&B) I'd suggest taking a look at Saarburg, with it's spectacular waterfall in the centre of town, and on to Trier to see the Roman remains. Don't miss the underground passages at the baths. In a slightly different direction, but easy to fit into a route to Calais, is the Rhine Gorge. Attractive towns, lots of old castles, and striking river scenes. We've just visited Germany, and found eating out inexpensive, and the independent hotels very fairly priced. To find all the web links you need, just go to the relevant tourist office website.
