Hi, I am planing a trip to Darjeeling and Gangtok in the 3rd week of April 2012, with my kids(12 and 7 yrs) 1. I want to know which is cheap and best hotel Darjeeling and Gangtok. 2. I am planing for 2N in Darjeeling and 2N in Gangtok. I am coming 16th by Darjeeling mail at 08.00hrs and leaving on 20th at 14.25hrs in NJG. Is this time enough for important places to see? 3. I want to travel in the rope way in Darjeeling and Gangtok. Is there any advance booking? Where shall i book it? 4. Is there snow in Gangtok during April? What sort of dress materials should we take? 5. Will it be possible to visit Nathu la in the same period? Thanks in Advance, Salem jas.
1. There are innumerable hotels in Darjeeling & Gangtok. I suggest you read some reviews of the hotels along with their tariff. VTers tips should help. 2. You arrive at NJP (New Jalpaiguri) at 8 am. You may head straight for Darjeeling (roughly 3 hours road journey) and expect to be in Darjeeling by lunch time. So 16th. and 17th. nights in Darjeeling. On 18th. morning, you can travel straight to Gangtok from Darjeeling instead of returning to NJP or Siliguri (17/18 kms apart, NJP and Siliguri). It should take you another 3 hours to Gangtok from Darjeeling. So by lunch time, you will be in Gangtok. 18th. and 19th. nights in Gangtok. On 20th., leave VERY early for NJP to catch your 14.25 hrs train. This itinerary seems adequate for basic sight-seeing for both places but the children may be rather exhausted by such long journeys. If they are not attuned to windy, hilly roads, ask your doctor to prescribe some medicine for them. 3. For the ropeway at both places, go early to avoid standing in queue and wasting your precious time. Find out what time they open the previous day, the day you land up. 4. There will be no snow in Gangtok in April. At both places, when the sun shines, the rays are very strong but you never know when it gets cloudy and windy or worse, when it starts raining. So dress appropriately and carry your windcheater or jacket. 5. You require permission to visit Nathla. You cabbie should be able to arrange it. But do be warned that this trip will take roughly 5 hours (to and fro) and your children may not be able to enjoy the long trip. You will not be able to spare that much time the day you arrive and you will miss out on the other tourist spots of Gangtok the next day if you attempt this trip.

Hi, i just came back from darjelling, gantok and pelling...it was unbelivable experince..well...3 days and 4 nights would be perfect for darjelling and 3D/4N for gantok too... plz dont waste time in pelling, as its not that worth going there.. in darjelling hotel old main belleauve is best, with very good discounts if you book online on their website in darjelling..its in main city itself..for food you would just have to hopp opposite ur hotel..coz.this is heritage hotel mostly for lodging.. rooms r good.and big enough for a family of 4..ask the desk person mr. subhash if hes there to arrange taxi for sight seeing at best rates.. people r very co ordinate and friendly.. darjelling rope way is closed since 2-4 years due to accident..but dont miss the iconic toy train ride..bookings r done there itself.. darjelling is gr8 place to hang out and shopping too.. try to reach gantok by 12..start from darjelling early morning as poosible..in gantok hotel PANDIM is good..rooms are not very good..but ok kind..but the view from there is amazing..this hotel is on topmost area of gantok..other than this hotel denzong inn is also good.. in gantok you can enjoy the ropeway, for which booking is done there itself.. very important..as soon as you reach book a agent for nathula pass, because you would have to submit photos ( 2 each) along with id prrof and address proof (local) to get a pass from indian army..this process has to be done before 12 noon, and next day morning by 7 they pick you for the trip to nathula pass..dont forget to carry passport size photos and documents of childrens and other members travelling..for the booking you can ask the hotel reception..all hotels arrange trips to nathula pass..cover nathula pass, baba harbhajan mandir, and tsongo lake..if you have more budget, ask the driver to take you that place where you can see nepal, india, bhutan, and china border....near nathula pass roam around m.g street..for shopping.. in april it wont be much cold..except nathula..snow was there in nov. and dec...month..MIGHT NOT be there..but maybe its there in nathula pass area,, if you r lucky..ofcourse you can see kanchenzonga mountains filled with snow from almost everywhere in sikkim..even from the hotels.. good luck....hava blast..:)
