      Train Tickets

      Rome Jun 12, 2013 at 7:26 AM

I am traveling to Rome and then to the Amalfi coast at the end of this month and into July. And am wondering if I need to buy my train tickets in advance? Last time I was in Italy, I do not think I did -should it be a problem to buy before boarding so we can keep our days a bit more flexible?

      thanks!

    • Statuary

      Rome May 20, 2013 at 7:34 AM

In the early 1930's, my mothers brother was a Catholic priest stationed at the Vatican. When he returned to the United States, he brought back with him a marble and alabaster statue of (we believe - Mary Magdeline at the well, though we have always referred to it as Martha at the well). The statue sits on a marble pedestal with an alabaster globe that sits on a column above the statue. When fully assembled, the statue, pedestal and column with the globe is about 8 feet tall. The statue itself is about 3 feet tall and it depicts a woman carrying a small vase which is attached to her left arm by a cord, standing next to a carving that looks like the head of a man that is sending forth the water that is supposed to be the well. We believe the piece is hand carved and that it was made in Italy. About 25 years ago my brother was in Rome and he saw a smaller version of this same statue at one of the Vatican gift shops. We are trying to find out who made the statue and if they are still in business, as well as what the real title / name of the statue is. The attached picture is of the statue without the pedestal and only a short piece of the column that the globe sits on. If anyone can halp me identify the maker of this statue and the name of the statue I would greatly apprecite it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this search.

      FCO TO MINORI, ITALIAN SPEAKERS?

      Rome Jun 12, 2013 at 9:14 AM

Hello, this june/july we are renting a car and exploring tuscany and then dropping the car off at FCO airport and heading to Minori for a few days (near Amalfi). I am trying to research the best/quickest and most affordable options to get there.

      1. the train from Roma Termini to Salerno and then take a bus
      2. i have found a post about a bus service from FCO to Salerno (which would be the most direct) here is the site they list -I do not see an English option, so I am havign some trouble translating and maneuvering the site. any help would be much appreciated: buonocore-group.it/?partenza...

If any Italian speakers could tell me if the bus lets off in Salerno near the train station -to catch the local bus to Minori and if prices are mentioned online? Also, should I buy ahead of time? Or is this bus a terrible idea?

      Gratzie!

      travelling in early november

      Rome Jun 4, 2013 at 8:28 AM

My daughter and I are planning to travel to Italy in the beginning of November. We plan to fly to Rome, stay a few days, then travel down the coast to see Sicily. I want to see Pompeii on the way down as well. We thought of driving, but see quite a few admonitions against driving in Palermo, so thought that the train would be the way to go? Thoughts, suggestions? The trip will be approx. 10 -14 days. Thank you!

From airport to Trastevere apartment, train, or taxi?

      Rome May 30, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Hi, In September I fly into Rome (Fumicino) with 3 friends. We are renting an apartment in the Trastevere neighborhood.
I have instructions on how to get to the apartment by train (to Trastevere station) then on a tram for 5 more stops, and a 3 block walk to the apartment.
I have no problem using trains/trams, etc, but my friends are worried they will be rateher jet lagged after the long flight, and think we should just take a taxi. Any idea how much we can expect the Taxi fare to be? is it a 'fixed rate' from the airport, are we expected to haggle over the price?

      Thanks!

      Itinerary suggestions?

      Rome Jun 1, 2013 at 7:37 AM

Hello everyone! Thanks for all of your help for our dilemma which Italian seaside town we should pick. We ended up finding a wonderful little apartment in Rome and we opted out to spend our vacation there at the end of June, begging of July. We would also have a couple of beach day trips to Lido di Ostia and maybe Santa Marinella.

I have done some quick research and roughly planned our 7 days in Italy. I would be very grateful if you guys tell me what you think. I used to live in Rome when I was younger but my memories have faded. My partner has never been to Rome before so I want us to explore the city off the beaten path. Thankfully, we won't be jet lagged as we live in Europe. Our flight is an are early morning one, so we won't be losing any precious time.

We are bad with strictly planned itineraries but I don't want us to not have any idea in what order it's most convenient to explore Rome.

DAY I: mainly just exploring Rome without entering the monuments Walk to the Colosseum, walk by the Roman Forum and look down over the ruins. Walk to the Pantheon then Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, enter both. Get a scoop of gelato and stroll toward the Spanish Steps, check out the Trevi Fountain.

DAY II: Enter the Colosseum, the Forum, and Palatine Hill. Either head straight to Piazza Navona or get back to the apartment, freshen up and then do so.

DAY III: Visit the Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica. Relax and spend the evening exploring Trastevere neighborhood, visit Basilica di Santa Maria while there.

DAY IV: Spend the day by the beach in Lido di Ostia. Evening - Aventine Hill.

DAY V: Piazza del Popolo, Santa Maria del Popolo, Villa Borghese. Evening - OPEN FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS

DAY VI: A day by the beach in Lido di Ostia. Evening - OPEN FOR YOUR SUGGESTIONS

What do you guys think? I would like to add more churches to the intenerary like Church of San Luigi dei Francesi, San Giovanni in Laterano, Church of Sant'Ignazio Di Loyola, Basilica di San Clemente but I am not sure which days I should fit them in... Thank you!

Hi - My family will be traveling to Gaeta, Italy in August and we are looking for an apartment to rent in Gaeta for a week. I've tried looking on all the big sites - BBPlanet, AirBNB, TripAdvisor, HomeAway, etc. but haven't been able to find one that's a fit. Does anyone have any recommendations for where else to look? We don't plan on renting a car, so looking for an apartment that's conveniently located near Gaeta Centre and beach. There will be 3 adults and one baby, so looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom. Thanks for your help! -Jessica

We are planning a trip to this area and want to pick a town with train access as well as bus to explore the region. We cannot tell by all the different postings for apartments which town will offer the easiest transport as we will not have the convenience of a car. We also are interested in being in an historical city or town. Would appreciate any help and information.

Hi, I was just hoping someone could help me. I am coming to visit my fiance next month who works onboard this ship and I need to book somewhere to stay. I am not sure where abouts the ship is and I would like to book accomodation as close to it as possible. Does anyone know if there is a particular dock, beach, body of water or something a long those lines that the navel base is on so that I can be sure to look in the right place? Even if anyone was able to tell me how far it is from the town centre that would be great and very much appreciated as I'm running out of time. Thanks. Regards, Tara
