Driving around Fussen

by cicada8 Online Now Apr 13, 2008 at 2:51 AM

Hi, I understand that driving to the south of Fussen will pass through Austria and is there a need to purchase any permit to drive there? I am only driving around the castles and probably to Linderhof and then Lake Plansee, all in a day. Do I need a GPS? Regards

    > Austria and is there a need to purchase any permit to drive there? No. You only need a vignette (toll sticker) if you want to use the autobahns in Austria. But no autobahns in this region. > Do I need a GPS? Don't know if YOU need a GPS. There are rumors that tourists have found their way to Linderhof castle also in pre-GPS times.

LOL@abalada :) You do not need a GPS, at least as long as you have a halfways decent map. The signposting is quite good and in alpine valleys (Linderhof) only one road exists. GPS is especially useful when you are looking for a specific address within a confusing environment (big city) and have no one else in the car to help you with the directions. If you are totally unfamiliar with the directions and have trouble reading the signs, GPS navigation might add some comfort, but there is no such thing as a perfect navigation and there are loads of people ending up in ditches and cowpaths because they trusted their GPS too much. You will have to look at the map anyway to avoid such a situation.
