Hello all. I was wondering if it would be worth buying a Kyushu rail pass as opposed to buying tickets per trip. My only travel will be from Fukuoka/Hakata to Kagoshima and back (round trip). The JR website does not list the prices for single trips. Thank you. Jenny
If I have the numbers right, a three day all Kyushu pass is Y14000, and I'm looking at a one way cost for your itinerary (unreserved) being close to Y10000. 5 days - Y17000

Wasn't aware Sfumatopants it cost that much for a one way trip between those two cities, but upon checking you are absolutely right. The pass will result in a reasonable saving for the return trip.

I checked out hyperdia. what is this seat fee though? does anybody know if I will still have to pay this seat fee if I have a rail pass?

Yes, you pay the seat fee. It's confusing to break it into two, it would be better if they just quoted the total, but the total fare is the seat fee and the fare fee.
