I am thinking of going to fukuoka for 5 days in january. wondering how much spending money i should bring, and what the best things to do are i definitely want to visit a hot spring or spa at some point. any adive/info would be great! thanks!
There's plenty to do in Kyushu, and getting a Kyushu railpass might be a good idea. In my view there isn't really enough in Fukuoka to sustain 5 days, so getting about is a good idea. For ideas of what to do check out my Fukuoka and Kitakyushu pages. For a hot spring area, why not try out Beppu which is 2 hours from Fukuoka by express train. Assuming that you aren't living in Korea, catching the Beetle fast ferry across to Busan in Korea might could also be of interest.

If you are wondering about costs, look at my page here for a general average, depending on how you travel. "Budget in Japan" - Japan Favorite Tip by dru46 I'd suggest a trip to Beppu for the hot springs and a possible day trip to Nagasaki. Saga is also good, so I've been told. I think Fugu is the best person to get advice on Kyushu though. She knows quite a bit. :)

I'm in Fukuoka just after New Years for a few days yasumi. Obviously, I've been researching things to do: Unfortunately Fukuoka isn't renowned for hot springs, but one I did find that get's high acclaim for the region is Nakagawa Seiryu.
