Road trip from Frankfurt to Prague

      Frankfurt 9 hours ago

This is the plan for the end of October this year. Is there any "must do" or "off the beaten path" things to do along the way? We will return to Frankfurt from Prague and we will have two weeks. Part of the reason we are in Frankfurt is to visit my boyfriend's family. Thank you, in advance, for you input!

      Munich May 3, 2013 at 8:54 AM

We will be in Munich between Christmas and New Year's. Our rented apartment is near the corner of Prinzregentenstrasse and Ismaninger Strasse. Can anyone recommend places near there for food, particularly breakfasts and dinners? I'd like to go with a few close-by recommendations for any days we need something closer to "home." Also, is there a grocery/store market nearby where we might be able to pick up a few things to keep in the apartment for snacking or simple breakfasts? Thanks in advance! ~Erin

    • Oktoberfest 2013

      Munich May 8, 2013 at 5:41 PM

I'm taking dad (retiree) and three other newbies to Munich for either Oktoberfest weekend. Ideally, I'd like affordable hotel accommodations, reservations at a fest tent, and a (very) patient guide to handle a senior citizen and the million questions my group will likely throw at him/her. Since time is limited with Oktoberfest around the corner, I'm thinking it might be best to sign up for an all-inclusive tour package, but which one? I've only been able to find what looks like "frat party" tours so far. Any help is appreciated.

    • Oktoberfest, what is my to-do list?

      Munich May 6, 2013 at 7:52 PM

      Hello everyone!!

I'm planning to go to the Oktoberfest this 2013, but I'm really really lost on this, hope you can give me a hand with all my very basic questions:

When is the best time to go to avoid craziness, if possible :)
What should I book in addition to hotel??
What are the so famous "tends"?
How much money should I expect to use? Mid range drinker
I've heard it gets too expensive, would it be worth to go after the festival to avoid that?

Thank you so much for any extra info you can provide!!!!

      Cheers!!!

      Options for my route

      Bavaria Apr 22, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Finalizing the last leg of my Bavaria itenary and hope to get some views. I have finalized the places I am visiting, only checking the better route and where to spend the night given train timings. My route is from Munich to Fussen (will see Neuwanstein only) and day trip to Rothenburg (DIY city tour) and Wurzburg (the Residenz tour at 11 AM, explore the city and Marienburg Fortress).

I have recommendation it is easier to head to Wurzburg (instead of Rothenburg) from either Fussen. From Wurzburg I will head to Frankfurt airport to fly out (do not plan to see Frankfurt). On the last day my flight is at 10 PM so I aim to be at the Frankfurt airport by 7 PM and will depart to airport from Wurzburg latest by 5 PM.

Day 1 take morning train to Munich, arrive by 1 PM, check in / deposit luggage in hotel, quickly DIY walking tour. Overnight Munich. (Do not need suggestions on this day as have got a lot of forum reply on Munich express tour already). Looking for feedback specifically on Day 2 onwards (option A, B or C) or any better option is appreciated.

      Option A
Day 2 day trip to Fussen, anticipate back by 6 / 7 PM, have the evening to maybe go to a beer garden... Overnight Munich.
Day 3 early morning check out take train to Rothenburg, deposit luggage in hotel, DIY walking tour, maybe at night for for watchman tour.... Overnight Rothenburg.
Day 4 early morning check out take train to Wurzburg, deposit luggage in train station, then see EXPRESS Wurzburg and head to Frankfurt airport
summary 2 night stay Munich, 1 night Rothenburg

      Option B
Day 2 day trip to Fussen, anticipate back by 6 / 7 PM, have the evening to maybe go to a beer garden... Overnight Munich.
Day 3 early morning check out take train to Rothenburg, deposit luggage in train station, spend whole day.... take night train to Wurzburg (only 1 hour) Overnight Wurzburg.
Day 4 early morning see EXPRESS Wurzburg and head to Frankfurt airport
summary 2 night stay Munich, 1 night Wurzburg

      Option C
Day 2 early morning check out, day trip to Fussen, deposit luggage at train station. Take night train to Wurzburg as easier to go to Wurzburg than Rothenburg from Fussen. Overnight Wurzburg.
Day 3 early morning take train (1 hour) to see EXPRESS Rothenburg, spend whole day.... take night train back to Wurzburg (only 1 hour) Overnight Wurzburg.
Day 4 early morning see EXPRESS Wurzburg and head to Frankfurt airport
summary 1 night stay Munich, 2 night Wurzburg

Which option is better? Or is there any better option? Thanks!

    • christmas 2 weeks

      Munich May 10, 2013 at 9:12 AM

My husband and 18 yr old son are travelling to Munich and wherever this Christmas. We fly into Munich on the 22nd Dec and will have christmas eve dinner in Munich, as well as see the markets. As everything is then closed thought of leaving on the 25th.
Iam not sure where to go to next?
We are Australians but live in the middle east so have always had a warm Christmas.
I have found a place to stay at Oberaudorf, but have to book it for 5 nights.
Then I see Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a great place to visit but will only have 3 days left as we fly out on the 2nd Jan.
I see most places are already booked out as we need a 2 bed apt or similar .
      Any suggestions on an itinerary/

      Day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle

by tracyskf Online Now Apr 7, 2013 at 9:51 AM

I am planning to visit on a Thursday in June (day trip from Munich). Plan to arrive by 10 AM, depart back to Munich by 4 PM (as I need to catch a train onwards to Wurzburg from Munich)

I read on the website that I can pre-order ticket ahead. Looking for suggestion on:
      - what time should I order ticket (English tour) as I read there is some climb uphill required?
      - how much time do I allocate for climb uphill (moderate fitness level only)?
      - anything specific to take note of in terms of arriving via train?
      - how many hours is sufficient to see the castle and are photos allowed inside?
      - is there any spot recommended to stop for good photos for the entire castle?
      - any other useful tips appreciated

VT'ers told me about the Bavarian ticket which I am aiming to get on the spot. =)

      Danke!

      Forggensee in May?

by JohanIsWeg Online Now Mar 8, 2013 at 3:51 PM

Have heard that Forggensee does drain out at times during the year to avoid flooding... Does anyone know what it will look like in May? Will it be a brown patch or will it still be scenic? Don't want to cycle around the lake if there's not going to be any water!
      Appreciate any advice.

      Fussen over Christmas 2010

by Hellfirejen Online Now Apr 11, 2010 at 5:47 AM

Hi guys, So i'm going back to Fuessen again, this time over Christmas. I have never been in winter so have a few questions, i'm grateful for any help you can give! Firstly, how does Christmas work in Bavaria, is it likely that we may find a restaurant to book for Christmas dinner, or would we be better buying our own food in? We are staying in a self catering guesthouse. Also, i have heard that you can take sleigh rides near Schwangau, where would I be able to find information to book this? We are flying over, and will do the main bulk of the journey by train, but when we get to Fuessen we wondered if it would be safe to get a rental car. I am assuming it will be snowy and icy and although my partner is used to driving in these conditions, we wondered if the roads are cleared and safe to drive on or if it is better to stick with taxis and trains. Last one, is there anywhere we definately should visit? I would like to visit Oberammergau again as I imagine it would be nice over the Christmas period. We are there for a week and although I have been to the area many many times, this is my first winter visit so I would like to do as much as I can! Thank you guys! (And thank you Globetrott, i'm going to guess you may reply :) - you're help is always appreciated!)

We want to see mountains, hike a little bit, swim in lakes, etc. We are not visiting München. Please, can you give some advice on: -places to stay (the 4 days in a place or change location every night?) -places to visit -car renting (is it a good idea?) -any suggestion! THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Hi! I'm writing a project for our German class here in Mgr.-Marcel-François-Richard High School in St-Louis-de-Kent, New Brunswick, Canada. The project consists of arranging a two-week trip to any city in Germany. So, I was wondering if someone could help me out by suggesting some places that one could visit in the city of Füssen. If you have any ideas, please e-mail to kewlio-origin [at] myrealbox [dot] com. (Of course, replace the [at] with @ and [dot] with . first. Just another trick to avoid spam bots.) Kewlio
