Hotel and nearby attractions

by grandmaR Online Now Jan 13, 2012 at 6:15 PM

I am getting a cruise from Perth (Fremantle) in July 2012, and my travel agent has proposed the Tradewinds Hotel, which doesn't seem to have any listing on VT. The reviews seem mixed, and they are also mixed for the hotel that Cruise Critics recommends which is the Esplanade. The disadvantage to the Eplanade is that they charge for the internet. We will be flying in from Sydney, arriving in the early afternoon. The travel agent thinks that we will be better off to have most of the commute from the airport done on the day before the cruise so we will just have a short taxi ride to the ship. Does anyone know any reason why this hotel wouldn't be advisable?

There really isn't any need for you to stay in Fremantle itself, it's only 8 miles from the airport to Perth CBD, and 12 miles from Perth on to Fremantle -hardly a long "commute". Perth and Fremantle are part of the same urban sprawl. I would suggest you look at Perth hotels where you have far more choice of you're looking for Sheraton/Marriott-type accommodation. If you choose to stay in Fremantle, the Esplanade makes more sense as it is much closer to the centre of Fremantle, just across the park from the Fisherman's Harbour, closer to restaurants, etc. Depending on the time you actually arrive (or board your cruise ship next day) the Fremantle Maritime Museum's Shipwreck Galleries are a 2 minute walk from the Esplanade and home to a display of the wonderfully atmospheric artifacts and story of a shipwreck, mutiny and murders that took place on the western coast of what was then New Holland back in 1629 "Murder and mutiny" - Fremantle Things to Do Tip by TheWanderingCamel If you like to get in touch, I'd be happy to come and meet you at the airport and be your taxi/tour guide for the day.

Agree with Wandering Camel. You can stay in Perth, plenty of hotels, or South Perth, just go to Hotels.com or Tripadvisor.com, last minute.com and choose accommodation which suits your budget. Taxi to Fremantle cruise terminal is most likely around30 from the city, or you could take the train from Perth to Fremantle, the Fremantle rail station is close to the station, check on GOOGLE MAPS, 5 MINUTES WALK.

I will have a travel scooter with me to get around on the ship. It can taken apart and put in the trunk, but it is a pain to do that so once I get to the hotel I'd like to be able to just use the scooter. Usually boarding for a ship is about noon - not late enough to do anything else in the morning.

Stay at the Esplanade if Fremantle is your choice. Tradewinds is quite a way from the town centre, certainly too far to scoot in to town. At the Esplanade you're right there, two minutes from the Fisherman's Harbour and waterside restaurants, the Cappucino strip (more cafes and shops), the historic Maritime Museum and the old heart of Fremantle - all flat access and scooter-friendly, a five minute taxi ride from the cruise ship dock ... everything so close you would have time to explore a little between breakfast and getting to the ship. Where are you cruising to?

The cruise goes around from Perth around the north side of Australia and ends up in Sydney. I'll suggest the Esplanade to my travel agent.

The Esplanade Hotel is an ideal location, I used to work in Fremantle many years ago and used to lunch/drink at the Old Esplanade an icon in those days, then taken over and developed into a modern hotel. You will be OK there.

If you flying in the day before and particularly want to stay in freo, then look at Rosie O'gradys, a lot of the people who leave freo on cruises stay there... its central and easy to get to the ship... Alternatively stay in perth and train it down, but make sure when you leave the station you head to the jetty markets and then down to ship, coz if you head to walk bridge its a bloody steep incline to walk/scoot up...
