We are 3 couples (one person aged over 60) who wish to catch a train from Frankfurt's main railway station to St Goar on Sunday 2nd September sometime after 3.30pm. We're wondering what the cheapest ticket(s) would be and if it's worth booking them online beforehand. Thanks for any advice, Kathy.
I have already replied to your other post. For travel within/from Germany it is worth buying your tickets in advance online in order to take advantage of the advance online discount offers. bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/... In this case the difference is not so great, with advance discount fares are available at 19 euro as against 20.50 or 25 euro standard fares. but there are departures with a standard fare of 18.10 euro, so depending on what time you want to travel it might be as easy just to buy the tickets when you arrive at Frankfurt (the standard price you see on the website is what you will pay at the ticket machines, but buying tickets at the ticket office carries an extra charge of ?2? euro). Bahn.de is the official German railway site and is entirely reliable. It also carries times and details for almost all European trains, so is a very useful tool indeed.

Cheapest is to use regional trains. St Goar is anyway served by regional trains only. 6 persons makes it a bit complicated, as the mini group offers of DB are just for up to 5 persons. 1 x Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket EUR 40,00 (for the first 5 persons) 1 x point-to-point ticket regional trains EUR 18,10 (for the 6th person) You can buy these tickets on spot. No advantage with buying them online at all. DB timetable reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu... Start: Frankfurt(Main)Hbf Destination: St Goar and select as means of transport "only local transport" if you want to use the above suggested tickets.
