There are none that I know of. Trier is less than 50 km away, but that's not on your way from Frankfurt.

VT member Nemorino lives in Frankfurt on Main and has many pages on small German towns. Visit his page and then contact him by email. Check his pages first

Boris: are you travelling by car or by train? Your question sounds like you travel by car, but I wanted to make sure. And how many hours/days do you have to travel from Frankfurt to Ürzig? There are many pretty small towns on the way, but it also depends on the route you take. If you take the "direct" route which Google Maps suggests (154 km, approx. 2 hours), there are: 1) Eltville, at Rhein River, 2) Bad Kreuznach and Bad Münster am Stein, just south of the motorway/highway cross A60/A61, 3) as soon as you arrive at Mosel River: Traben-Trabach and Kröv. And the whole part of Mosel River around Ürzig is pretty small towns. If you follow Nahe River from Bad Kreuznach to the west, this is a pretty drive through Nahe Valley as such (did it several times). There is Idar-Oberstein, gemstone town, and just north of it is Herrstein, a tiny but cute village: kuenstlerdorf-herrstein.de/2... You have to have a good map if you drive the non-motorway route though.

Mike: Nemorino has fantastic pages about small towns, but these are mainly north and northeast of Frankfurt: Nemorino's Travel Map Boris: in case you like to read more about the villages I suggested, you can read my pages about Bad Münster, Bad Kreuznach and Idar-Oberstein: Trekki's Travel Map And member @Globetrott has covered many many villages along Mosel River: members.virtualtourist.com/m... Kröv, Traben-Trabach, Beilstein, etc. I think his Cochem page covers the Mosel river villages: " A great castle in the lovely Mosel - valley" - Cochem by globetrott

Ok, then I really suggest the route through Nahe Valley. This would be: 1) from Frankfurt Airport, take A3 direction Köln (Cologne), and then A66 which passes through Wiesbaden and continues as Bundestrasse (federal road) B42 directly to Eltville. You can briefly stop in Eltville, it is a small town. 2) Continue B42 until Rüdesheim and take the ferry across Rhein River to Bingen, 3) when you have left the ferry, in Bingen turn right and follow the signs to B9. When you see the signs (B9) direction Koblenz and St. Goar, follow B9/B48 the other direction, which should say Bad Kreuznach. B48 leads through Langenlonsheim, Bretzenheim, until BAd Kreuznach, 4) in Bad Kreuznach, you can park the car here: maps.google.de/maps?q=49.848... and walk southwest through the old town. If you look for "Mannheimer Straße", which is a bridge, this is where Bad Kreuznach's bridge houses are located, 4) Back in the car, take B48 across Bad Kreuznach, direction "Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg" . In Bad Münster, you can park the car here: maps.google.de/maps?q=49.810... and walk to the "Kurmittelhaus" (or Kurhaus, but I think it is signposted as Kurmittelhaus). This is it: cms.naheland.net/pg/usr_imag... 5) from Bad Münster get on L235 direction Norheim, and you will pass the steepest cliff north of the Alps, called Rotenfels. This is it: geo.de/reisen/community/bild... 6) in Norheim, follow the signs to B41, which is northeast and a bit winding. Then drive west, direction (presumably) Bad Sobernheim, Idar-Oberstein. Near Bad Sobernehim, B41 meets Nahe River and near Dhaun the "valley" starts, 6) if you want to visit Herrstein, leave B41 in Fischbach and get onto L160, 7) From Herrstein it is a winding and small road affair now, because this is Hunsrück (forest & hills). Continue on road L160 until you arrive in the village of Morbach. Take road B269, direction presumably Bernkastel-Kues, but definitely Gonzerath. Just a few km after Gonzerath take a left into B50/E42, which will lead directly to Bernkastel-Kues. 8) Stay on the Bernkastel side of the river (the eastern part of the river), on B50/53 and follow this road. In Zeltingen it will cross the river and after a few km you are in Ürzig. The roads with letter B are a bright yellow-orange, of this type: http://www.grenzen.150m.com/aachen.JPG Enoy your trip :-)) Ingrid

Boris, you don't say where you are flying from but some European budget airlines, especially Ryanair, fly into Frankfurt-Hahn airport which is halfway between Frankfurt and Luxembourg! The advantage is that it is only about 30 km from Urzig. This will give you plenty of time to travel around but will change the advice you have alreaddy been given. If you are flying from outside Europe or using most other airlines then you will fly into Frankfurt airport. Let us know in case you need more advice. Bruce

Good. Sorry to sidetrack you but it wouldn't be the first time someone has got airports mixed up. My father once hired a car through a travel agent, the car to be collected from Glasgow airport. When he checked his details he discovered that the car was to be collected from Gatwick (London) Airport. When Dad questioned this the travel agent said that Gatwick was the Glasgow airport for International flights. My father explained that she meant Prestwick, but that international flights had changed from there to Glasgow Internatinal the year before! So it can happen. Enjoy your travels in Germany. Bruce
