what to do in frankurt for 5-6 hrs

by cherylll Online Now Apr 26, 2012 at 5:04 PM

My hubby and I have a stop over in Frankurt (June 27) enroute to Portugal. Our plane is due to arrive in Frnakfurt at 2pm and then we fly out at 9:30pm...I was wondering what the possibility is of him and I going into Frankfurt...is there enough time? if so, where would be the best place to go to see the older, more tourist area's? best mode of transport into these area's?...my husband has never been to Germany (yet)...Thank you! Cheryl

I go by there on business and into surrounding areas, for your time the airport; transport its trains to the city or hire a taxi. You will be in Germany at Frankfurt ::) My opinion of course. Cheers

while Frankfurt ist of course in Germany, I disagree with gwened here for a moment because Frankfurt isn't exactly a synonym nor typical for Germany. Then again, Berlin isn't either (but at least has more to offer). You could take the S-Bahn (S9) to Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) and change for the subway (U4) to Dom/Römer. Or go take the S9 to Hauptwache and walk over to Römer. You'll have plenty of time, really. Perhaps check the tips here on vt, but Frankfurt isn't really a top destination for tourists.

Frankfurt city tour leaflet frankfurt.de/sixcms/media.ph... Use the S-Bahn lines S8 or S9 from Frankfurt Airport (basement of Terminal 1) to the stop Hauptwache (#18 on the map on the leaflet). Travel time is 15 minutes. Buy a mini group day ticket (EUR 14,90) which is less than single tickets for 2 persons. Covers all mean of local public transport (regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses). The old city centre of Frankfurt is however walkable. Distance Hauptwache to the river Main is approx. 750 meters.

People flying in to Frankfurt from other parts of the world often ask me what they could do here during a brief visit, and the first thing I always recommend is that after sitting cramped up in a plane for many hours they should get out and have some exercise by cycling, jogging, walking, or in-line skating along the left (south) bank of the Main River. (Take the south bank because the views are better from there.) If the weather is good you could also go up to the observation deck on top of the Main Tower, which is Frankfurt’s fourth – no, fifth – tallest building with a height of 200 meters. Of course if you come from Chicago, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei or Dubai you won’t be too impressed by such a puny building, but the views are great and it’s very invigorating on a nice day.

Just a few more details about taking the train from the airport into Frankfurt: First of all, make sure you are arriving at Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) and not Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN). Hahn is a LONG way from Frankfurt, whereas FRA is very close – so close that there are large weekly protest demonstrations about aircraft noise. At FRA there are two railway stations, both in Terminal 1. To go into town you need the regional station. The S8 and S9 to Frankfurt both usually leave from track 1. Be sure to buy a ticket beforehand, from the blue machine, because no tickets are available on the train and there are often inspectors who will fine you if you don’t have a ticket. Get off at the fifth stop, Hauptwache, and you will be right in the center of town.
