Special for Franfurt or special for Germany?
The souvenirs mentioned in the first reply are the standard souvenirs for Southern Germany. You can get them in the tourist shops in the centre of Frankfurt.
Typical for Frankfurt would be the blue and white crockery used for drinking the local apple wine, called a Bembel. You can see a picture here:

    You said special ...

Ask him to buy you a ticket to Frankfurt then book you in the Auf Schaumburg castle hotel in Oberwesel ... http://www.hotel-schoenburg.com/

From here you can take a boat and sail up the Rhine river into Koblenz and
have fun shopping for anything you want. Then take the train back.

    Win-win situation -

Germany is too beautiful and a beer stein or cuckoo club don't do it the same justice as checking it out by yourself. Have some good Rhine valley wine while overlooking the river from the hotel terrace.

I think the one I liked was plain Riesling.

Now ... it would not hurt to ask about the ticket - you never know he might say yes ...

Apart from that, most beer steins and cocoo sold in the tourist shops might be made in China crap these days, there are other very nice souvenirs which are actually also MADE in Germany.
For example these wooden figures from Erzgebirge:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%A4uc...
and also check the link in there to Schwibbogen and Christmas pyramids.
Or, local to Frankfurt are these delicious pastries: Bethmännchen:
