Day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, Fussen from Frankfurt

by tracyskf Online Now Mar 10, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Hi, is it possible to do a day trip from Frankfurt to Neuschwanstein Castle? I have researched on the web - some think it is a bad idea as long trip journey, however most information are probably outdated. I am looking for more practical tip on the best way to do this (in May) and hope to get very useful information. There is just 2 of us, so driving is out of the question, but open for suggestion on public transport or even a day tour excursion with a tour company (if any).

THANKS!

Train to munich, transfer to a train to fuessen, which is right on the border with austria. then there are buses up the hill to the castle neuschwanstein and the other ludwig castle in the area.

It's a 3-4 hour trip each way by car....so if you don't want to spend 8 hours driving, take the train to Munich and go from there instead.

Stay overnight it is too far to make a day trip.

From Frankfurt it's between 5 and 6 hours by train, depending on when you leave and which trains you use - too far for a day trip. Spending the night in Munich is much better.
You can check the times for the trains on bahn.de. Type in Frankfurt to Fuessen train station. From there you can take a bus or a taxi to the castle.

Thanks - all replies are very helpful. I am now considering to do this as a day trip from Munich instead by changing the sequence of my route. I suppose this is more do-able as a day trip from Munich? =)

From Munich it's an easy day trip. There are direct trains taking just under two hours each way. It's local trains only, so the Bavaria ticket is valid.

Thanks for all the replies which is very helpful. I have now changed my plans as such to head to Munich, then have a day trip to Fussen from Munich.

I would like to find out:
    - Do I have to buy the ticket from Munich to Fussen in advance (I do know I can purchase online ticket). Is the ticket readily available and would it be cheaper if I were to buy it online?
    - Do I have to get return ticket? If so how many hours is recommended to be in Fussen?
    - Christine, you mentioned Bavaria ticket - can you provide more details on this please? I am not sure how this works.

    Thanks! =)

You can find more details about the Bavaria ticket on the bahn website, I hope this link works:
    bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/prices...
    Click on Bayern/Bavaria for details.

The Bavaria ticket is valid on local trains only, which are the same price no matter when they are bought. So there is no need to book in advance.
