Looking for wonderful area between Metz and Brugges

by annierosenberg Online Now Mar 19, 2013 at 10:41 PM

This July, we'll be on a 3-week trip in France (Alsace/Lorraine) Swiss Alpes (4 days) and Brugges for 5 days at the end. Does anyone have a suggestion about a wonderful (scenery, history, charming village) about midway between Metz and Brugges? It could be in France, Luxembourg or Belgium. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Isn't Bruges 5 days a bit long? Verrrry long, in fact?
I would spend 2-3 days in the Belgian Ardennes, then move on to Bruges for a day or two.

Leuven (Louvain) is a great historical town in Belgium and far less touristy than Bruges and also with its own world heritage site. I prefer it.

    Hello Annie,
on the way from Metz to Bruges you'll come through Walloon, the french speaking southern part of Belgium. Along the way there are such sites as for instance the Orval Abbey, where you can taste their excellent beers and cheese. And in the basement of the ruin of the old abbey is a small museum. There's also Durbuy, reputedly Europe's smallest village, nestled in the Ardennes. In this very quaint village you can enjoy a number of adventure activities such as hiking, cayaking, rapelling, etc..there's also Namur and Dinant, home of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone, with its fortress over looking the river Meuse. More in the north is the beautiful city of Antwerp. And Ghent as well. Enjoy your stay....

Or you could go west from Metz to Reims which is a historic and fascinating city. Then you could head north through Laon and Lille and into Belgium. Type the places into the VT search window above to look at their Travel Pages to see if they speak to you.

I think you'll be fine for 5 days in Brugge. Not only is there a lot to do, you can easily take the train to other cities. We spent a day in Gent and really enjoyed it. Belgium is small so you can do that. Another thing we loved was a canal boat trip. We were staying in the country so we did the trip in the reverse from what you would do. The boat goes between the small, quaint village of Damme to Brugge and it's a lovely trip. We did it twice going from Damme to Brugge. It would give you a chance to see a charming and historic Belgian village.

Whatever you decide, enjoy your trip.
