Hi! Im from Iceland and I and my girlfriend are coming to Brazil (& hopefully as much of S-America that we can cover) in September. Coming from far away we of course want to maximize our time there. Our plan is to check-out the Brazilian side and the Argentina side in 1 day? Is that to optimistic? Then I was wondering if the Paraguyan-side was worth the visit? Ive heard about a tax free paradise but we dont want to buy anything since we would have to carry it a round for the whole time. So is there anything else to do there except shopping? Some nice cafés and watching interesting culture is sufficient! So does somebody recommend it? Thanks! Bearzy
One day for both the Brasilian and Argentine side might be a bit difficult, but certainly you could in a 1 1/2 days. Not sure that going into that part of Paraguay is worth the effort. I have heard reports of tourists that were allowed across the border without the Visa only to be detained by the police and then subjected to rather large "fines" in order to be released. I would spend the extra time enjoying the falls, they are truly wonderful. suerte SAM

We did both sides in a day but we were really rushed and only had time for about 1/2 the sights on the Argentine side. A full day for the Argentine side and at least a 1/2 day for the Brazilian side would be preferable.

Welcome to VT Bearzy. One day for both sides of the falls is really too optimistic. You need a full day for the Argentinian side. Check the water levels for September. I saw a picture of the falls, which was taken in September last year and there was almost no water at all !! (see: flickr.com/photos/hosoitoshi... We intended also to visit Paraguay (Punta del Este), but skipped it from our itinerary, having read and heard it is one of the most dangerous areas in South America. I would recommend staying in Puerto Iguazu (Argentina), which is much more authentic than Foz in Brazil. Happy travels Jaap

Hi guys and thanks for your help. I read alot about Ciudad del Este and it seems as a very interesting place. The heat, the dirt, the hustling and crowds of all kinds of people just sounds very interesting for a Icelander. We dont have anything like this in my country. I really like nature and waterfalls but interesting (although hostile!) people and culture is something I like more :) (My girlfriend does not like this as much as I so she will hear a story about a beutiful and quite village in Paraguay and of course I will deny every claim that I knew about this if we get into trouble). So my plan is: Day 1: Arrive at noon to Foz de Igazu and spend the rest of the day there checking out Devil´s Throat and other intersting sights. Day 2: Leave as early as sensible for a bus to Ciudad del Este, stay there for 1-2 hours, have a beer and watch the crazyness and then head for Argentina. Spend the rest of the day checking out as much of the waterfalls as possible but of course I´ll miss something. Day 3: Bus/or flight to Buenos Aires. The bus will probably be better since I´ll then have plenty of time to beg my girlfriend for forgiveness. How is that for a plan? I would get a taste of everything but certainly not as much as I would have liked :) Since we will just be in South America for just over a month and wanting to go to Rio, Iguazu Waterfalls, Ciudad del Este, Colonia, Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Santiago, Macchu Pichu and Lima (flying home from there). Then you can imagine that we are in little bit of hurry! Best wishes from Iceland (snowing heavily now, damn) Bearzy.

I think better is: 1)Arrive and visit the Brasilian side of the falls. 2)Spent the hole day visiting the Argentin side of the falls. 3)visit cuidad del Este untill noon and take than the bus direction Buenos Aires.
