I'm trying to plan a trip to include Fort William, Ullapool and the Isle of Lewis for a familt with one small child. Any suggestions for exciting things to do?

It depends on what sort of things you enjoy doing, and the age of your child. Up here in Lewis there's plenty of sandy beaches, and of course the Callanish Stones. There's also a black house museum on the west side, and lots of fishing boats here in Stornoway. You may want to return via Tarbert-Isle of skye as there's plenty of beatiful scenery that way too.

Fort William terms itself the Outdoor Capital of the UK so if you enjoy outdoor activities you should be well catered for - lots of forest walks, cycle rides, gondola up Aonach Mor. There are castles, distilleries, loads of scenic drives etc.

I just hope that the weather is good for you!

The fish and chip shop in Ullapool is excellent - followed by a pint in the pub on the harbour front. Why not take a drive around the peninsular to Achiltibuie? There is a very nice hotel/pub there called the Summer Isles Hotel which does excellent food. There is also a very nice beach on the headland.

Depends a lot on when, how you are travelling, the age of your child and your budget. Four of us stayed in Fort William about three years ago and found it a good base for a few days. Plenty of opportunity for walking and touring. If your budget allows there's the Jacobite Express steam train journey from FW to the coastal village of Mallaig - see www.steamtrain.info for times, prices and what you will see along the way. There's also a nearby cable-car ride up a mountain alongside Ben Nevis. We were also surprised to find a small ten-pin bowling alley in FW. Make your first stop the very good tourist information centre in the middle of town (cheap internet connections and help with accommodation). Also check out www.visit-fortwilliam.co.uk. Hope the weather is kind to you!
