I will be accompanying my husband on a business trip to Fort Myers in mid Sept. Of course, Sanibel Island? captiva is #1 on my to do list. Is there good public transportation in the area? Is a car rental my best option?
Lived in the area for a number of years. Your best bet is to rent a car giving you option of going wehere ever you wish. Bridge tolls are a bit expensive going to Sanibel. Dak. a irre ycm.v

No reliable public transit as it is very limited in the destination / pick up points. Better to rent a car. Great beaches everywhere. I like to go to the end of Captiva. There is a great little spot where you turn left called Andy Rosse Lane. There are a bunch of little beach cafes on that street. Enjoy a meal at the Bubble Room (Known for their sweet confections, enormous portions, and nostalgic ambiance). For alfresco dining and cocktails, try the Key Lime Bistro across the street. At the end of the lane, there is the beach. On the beach is a great bar / restaurant, the Mucky Duck. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas on that street as well as scooters and other unique vehicles. Sand is soft and the water is great.
