    • Are there any good coffee shops in Fort Lauderdale other than Starbucks?

Fort Lauderdale May 7, 2015 at 1:30 PM

I am from Tampa and will be heading to Fort Lauderdale in a couple of weeks. I usually enjoy independent coffee shops that offer fresh roasted small batch coffee brewed through a French press. I have done some research on yelp and came up with a few local places. If anyone else knows of a good spot please let me know. Here is what I found:

Sip Java Co - (formally Brew Urban Café) @ 638 N Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale FL. I heard that they carry Intelligentsia, Anodyne and Wells Coffee (all small roasted batches from around the world and you can brew them with a few different methods). Free wifi and good snacks or all day food offerings, tons of seating indoors and outdoors. Very quiet with free parking out front.

Brew Urban Café - 537 NW 1st Avenue in the art district. They are located in an art studio called C&I studios. Quiet and good locally roasted coffee too.

Warsaw Coffee Company - 245 E 13th St Fort Lauderdale FL. New coffee shop with lots of seating. They also offer locally roasted coffee from Argyle and have a bakery which pumps out some original and unique pastries. A little more on the pricey side of things and parking is limited.

The Alchemist - They are located in Wilton Manors which is about a 15 minute drive from Fort Lauderdale. They have a good variety of coffee and pump out some good sandwiches.

These are some of the best places to enjoy coffee. If you all have any additional info please reply!

    • Commuting Orlando to Auburndale / Lakeland

      Orlando May 4, 2015 at 7:57 AM

I've yet to find a good answer to this question.

I will be starting a new job in Auburndale, FL and planned to commute from the north side of Orlando (near I-4). I understand I-4 could potentially be a nightmare during rush hour, but does it depend on the direction you're going?

Traveling south (I-4 W) during morning traffic and north (I-4 E) in afternoon traffic. Will I generally be going against heavy traffic? Estimated time typically says near 1 hour. Would you expect this to be higher, or relatively accurate?

I appreciate any insight you could offer...Thanks!

Transportation South Beach to Miami Seaquarium?

      Miami May 19, 2015 at 4:57 PM

I will be staying in South Beach Miami next Friday and Saturday morning. Originally I was planning on just hanging out at the beach, Lincoln Road Mall, Ocean Drive, etc. but now I think a change of pace might be nice. I was doing some reading and I'm thinking about visiting Miami Seaquarium. I know there are some mixed reviews of the place, but I think it's mostly from people comparing it to SeaWorld and I haven't been anywhere like that before so I think I'll enjoy it. :)

The problem is it /is/ a little expensive at $42/ticket, so I'm only going to do it if there's a cheaper public transportation option I can take there. It looks like a cab ride would be $24-30 each way and I'd rather not make this a $100 excursion. Is there like a bus route or something I could take? If so, how much would it cost and how long would it take? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Is there anywhere you highly recommend we snorkel at that we can just go from the land w/o boat. Also I am looking on Amazon at snorkel sets, is it best to just buy from on there and take with or buy once in the keys?

by venum1984 Online Now May 31, 2014 at 10:21 PM

1)We are staying at a resort that has both a kitchen and bbq for us that is located in Key Largo. Where is the best place to buy a weeks worth of groceries where you will get both the most bang for your buck, as well as quality items?

2)Driving from Key Largo to Key West on average during a weekday say at 9am, does it take the full 2 hours google maps says it does?

3)Where is the best place to buy general store items, mainly snorkels, fishing pole, and any other just general items? Should we buy on the mainland or once in the keys?

4)What is a MUST DO item that a couple has to do on their first trip to the keys?

by staryeyeddreamer Online Now May 30, 2014 at 5:54 AM

My husbands friend wants to go to the Bahamas on a group vacation, my husband and I live in Florida and were looking at prices and it seems like the Florida keys would fit better into our budget. My question is which would be a better vacation the Bahamas or the Florida keys? There would be two couples, my 6 month old daughter and a one other friend. I don't mind spending a little more for better memories. Thanks a million and happy travels 

by bossapplesauce Online Now Mar 11, 2014 at 3:19 PM

My sister, cousin and I are headed to the keys the first weekend of May. We will be staying 3 days and 3-4 nights. We are doing our open water scuba dives for certification as well as trying to fit in one additional dive. I am looking for a great place (key) to stay that isn't a tourist mecca, and isn't filled with college kids, but is still fun. We'll be splitting our time diving, hanging at the beach and exploring. A place that has a small bit of nightlife would be awesome but again, not looking for the "drag" of college bars and tourists that key west is known for.

Any suggestions on which key to call home base, unique accommodations, must see detours would be greatly appreciated.

Where to stay - any hidden gems?

by mickey.p Online Now Oct 14, 2013 at 1:26 PM

We are arriving into Fort Lauderdale at 9.30pm on 31st December and driving to the Keys, looking for somewhere to stay for 2 nights, Islamorada we are told is 2 hours drive from FLL and we found the Hampton Inn & Suites which seems nice but somethings not clicking with it - not sure what though.

Are there any hidden gems in the keys that anyone can recommend? We stayed at the Outrigger in Fort Myers which is the type we like, nothing glitzy but beach front, Wifi and clean for a reasonable price!

I know its New Year and busy so asking a lot but this site has delivered a few gems to me before!

We are looking to drive down to Key West at some point but not stay there as we know that they have a big party on NYE!

I'm seeking local knowledge for my transition. Help?

by bo12au Online Now Jan 18, 2013 at 5:36 AM

I plan on moving to the keys the beginning of Feb. Starting fresh. I am a USMC Veteran seeking peace and serenity from the former madness. I am in my twenties with no kids, or mortgage holding me back from my plan, just a lack of local knowledge of the islands. And i have a very tight budget. My original plan was to move to key west, live in a tent, find work, move up the ladder etc. After further research, it seems like key west is not the wisest place to begin my new life. I am now looking into maybe starting in the upper keys. I want to work at a Marina or as a mate on a fishing charter boat. With my final goal being to purchase my own sailboat. I grew up on a fresh water lake working at a Marina, not the same as salt I understand, but I do have some knowledge of operating boats and some sailing experience. I will work anywhere really to begin with. I am using craigslist to find job openings and a possible place to rent. I need some local advice putting this plan into action. All knowledge would be greatful. Thank you

When we were in Key West about 5 years ago, we were making small talk with a bartender one day and he mentioned that there are people who own live-aboard class boats that are harbored in the various Keys and rent them out as alternatives to condos for travelers. He did not have specifics, but we are about to plan a trip down there again in the spring and would very much like to explore that as an option. I have Googled around a LOT and have not really found much so I'm not sure if this is only something done in very small numbers or if I'm just looking in the wrong places. Which Key to visit?

by lovinoz Online Now Feb 19, 2011 at 9:59 PM

Doing some forward planning for a two week visit to the Keys in August / September 2012 and wondering if anyone can suggest which Key we should visit. If there are two really spectacular keys, we'd consider stay a week each on two keys.

Purpose of the trip is to catch up with family and friends in a beautiful location. Rob and I live in Australia and the rest of the family will be coming down from Virginia and central Florida. Total of 10-18 adults and no children. Thinking about renting a couple houses for the visit. Definitely will want a pool and beach access. Nearby good snorkelling spots are a must. I am all about the pristine sand and crystal clear water.

Hopeful that the keys have that since I've only been to central Florida beach (Cocoa Beach) with the brown unappealing water.

Anyways ... suggestions would be much appreciated! Especially if you have stayed on more than 1 key and can share your favorite.

We will have a three year old and an infant with us and having a beach right on the premises where the kids will be able to play in the water is convenient. Has anyone been there?
