where to snorkel?

by komita55 Online Now Jul 23, 2012 at 7:59 PM

We've snorkeled a lot but never in the keys. It doesn't sound like there's much to snorkel and we definitely need to take a boat. we only are going once so want to make it count! Where is the best snorkeling? off of Key West? Marathon? Pennekamp? somewhere else? Thanks for any advice and information.

It's been a number of years since I was diving (not snorkeling) in the Keys and we went out of Marathon. Some of the worst coral I've seen anywhere in the world. Stressed and bleached due to heavy over-diving. From what I've read, things have gotten worse, not better.

the keys is prime for that, I used to go out on family boat from islamorada. THe pennenkamp is nice, with glassbottom boats, protected park. you have Bahia honda down near arriving Key West, very nice too. then you have Marathon, and Big Pine Key has an aquatic reserve that boats take you out on trips diving and snorkeling. Its really nice. This is where my family still goes there as live not far, Robbie's marina http://www.kayakthefloridakeys.com/ hope it helps

We have been to Key West and i did a snorkel tour directly from the hotel. It was a short drive because the reef is about one or two miles offshore. The place tehy took us was crowed with fish, so i had the imprssion to jump into a fish-bowl :-). It was really amazing how many different fish in so many shapes and colors where around me. The crew provided masks, fins and drinks. It was not too expensive and i could really recommend it.
