are we crazy?

by thehoop Online Now Mar 5, 2012 at 12:22 PM

We're planning a trip from Miami through the Keys at the beginning of September. Is this really a bad time to do this due to hurricane season? Thanks.

No you're not crazy. Yes, it is hurricane season but the odds are much more in your favor than not. This does not mean one COULD'NT happen but the chances are smaller rather than larger. "In the Keys, the historical 100-year average frequency of a hurricane of any category impacting is one in every 4.5 years." fla-keys.com/hurricaneseason... Enjoy your trip!!!

It's not necessarily crazy, but it would be crazy if you booked all of your trip as non-refundable. Non-refundable, non-changeable flights are generally changeable if there is severe weather like hurricanes or blizzards--but the airline is unlikely to let you change your flights just because it's going to rain the whole time due to a big hurricane two hundred miles away. I would make sure and book a non-binding hotel rate in case you need to change plans in a hurry.

from an 18 yrs resident, who spent many times in the keys with the family boat, I think its a terrific idea. September is nice, hurricane major activities are in august, and nov but then again you are playing with weather so unpredictable. Enjoy the trip

As someone who has lived here for 31 years I agree with guwned that you are not crazy and you *should* be alright however, end of August, through September and mid October are usually the most active months. By "active" I don't necessarily mean just the chances of hurricanes but also tropical storms and tropical lows which translate into heavy downpours and/or sometimes rains which can last days. It's the luck of the draw for sure. September/Key West in fact usually receives the most amount of precipitation with an average of almost 7" compared to 5.30 August - 5.02 in October and it goes down from there. Here in Miami August reads at 7.97" of rain, September 9.11 and October 6.95. Same goes for Tampa, Orlando, jacksonville, Tallahassee and Pensacola. I'm not trying to dissuade you but you should be prepared for rain - and sometimes quite a bit of it - rather than a hurricane. Homer

Hi, I don't think so. Florida is such a large state. We do have more storm activity in the summers but from Miami you could be across the state in 2 hours if a large storm was heading to the eastern part of the state. Then you would get to see the beautiful west coast also.

YES indeed I escape Andrew like that, move up to Daytona Beach lol! anyway rain is a normal process if that happenned no guarantee it will during your stay either. You are coming to the semi tropic regions so always a chance. Main thing is enjoy your trip, cant play with mother nature. Cheers

It is very warm/humid. The fishing is great & streets empty. However be FOREWARNED Petersons annual POKER RUN is held around The 3rd weekend of Sept. 10 tbkusands average bikers hit The Keys,US1.and you wont find a motel vacancy. Look on Peterson s Harely Davidson of Homestead to find The exact dates this year. It is THE ONLY event we have between mid August & last week of October. Otherwise; C'mon Down !
