Diving in the Keys

by grant1313 Online Now Apr 9, 2011 at 10:10 PM

I will be in Miami in mid May and am planning to spend Thursday to Sunday in the Florida Keys doing some diving. I will hire a car and drive down and stop at one or two spots depending on what is there. I am keen to know where would be the best places in the Keys to go and which dive operators are good, plus mid range accommodation for when I am down there. Currently I am thinking that Key Largo is the place I should go but am keen for suggestions

Personal opinion is that you do not waste your time in th keys. I did a dive trip to Key Largo a number of a years back and was terribly disappointed. The reef was bleached and totally dived out. I have not been back since. My guess is that the keys are just too close to Miami and with that many people, the diving is not sustainable. If you are looking for a dive shop, we dove with Conch Republic Divers. I'm pretty neutreal on them, given the chance I would have no problems going with them again, but would just as likely try another dive shop.

The Bahia Honda State Park is pretty nice if you like camping, and they have snorkeling tours. Don't know anything about diving, sorry.
