where should i stay if i am plannng for a 4 day road trip from miami to key west? should i make a stop and stay overnight at other cities than key west along the way before i reach key west? How many nights should i be spending at key west? which area to stay if i want to be near stuffs (restuarant, the beach) but not in a super tourist trap? is there any good waterfront properties?
I use Google Maps for getting estimated driving times and best suggested routes. They say that it's about 4 hours drive from Miami to Key West. I recall doing the drive some years ago and stopping off on the way at places that interested me like Key Largo. But it was mainly a road with sea either side and not many places to stop over. But it must have developed a lot over the years and maybe you could consult this website and if you see something that interest you then investigate it further ? http://www.fla-keys.com/ I stayed at the Best Western Ambassador which is short of the main tourist sights but as key West is relatively small it's easy to move around. If you find somewhere that interests you on the way then try to stay over at one of the Keys. I think 2 nights in Key West is plenty unless you have another reason for staying.

Not many places to stay in the keys unless you have money to stay at some of the better resorts on the way down. Key Largo is a good place to stay especially on the weekends. Good for parties. 2 nights in Key West is probably fine unless you want to keep drinking. You can walk almost anywhere and they do have a trolley. You can see just about everything in a day or 2. Be sure to visit the Hemmingway house. If you stop at the tourist information office when you first get to KW they have a book of places to stay. You can get a nice B&B for relatively cheap for KW. Not too cheap to stay there. Brian

Great question, since both places are a joy to visit! You're cutting yourself short either way with just four days in South Florida. If you're flying into Miami, and depending on your arrival time, I would drive down to Key West first, and spend a day and half, then drive back up to Miami for two days! It's about a three to four hour drive to Key West because it is mostly a single road between each of the Keys, but you will definitely enjoy the scenery and ocean views along the way. Key West is a tourist town so there is much to do, and many of the hotels are located on the water or close to water. Did you mention, good waterfront properties? It's Forida! However, depending on your taste and what you're looking for, all waterfront properties are good. Fixer uppers is where the money is at! Get a good deal, fix it up, and raise the value of the property because once the market gets back to normal you'll be setting pretty! ;o) As far as Miami... I would recommend staying on South Beach, but the best hotel is whatever your budget can manage! There are many hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, bars, etc and not to mention the beach. All this is in one centralized area in SoBe. If this will be your first trip to South Florida, you will certainly enjoy your trip, but you will not be able do everything both places have to offer. But that gives you a reason to keep coming back. Hopefully, this information is helpful to you. Let me know, if I can be of assistance in other ways. All the best!
